Norwich Terrier: description of the breed

Norwich Terrier is a breed of small hunting dogs hailing from the UK. It got its name from the city of Norwich, in which it was bred in the seventies of the XIX century. When breeding the breed, black-tan, red and black-tan British terriers were crossed. Due to this, an excellent hunter for rodents and predators has turned out. This dog can be called one of the smallest terriers.

History

Norwich Terrier, whose price today ranges from 35,000 to 50,000 rubles, appeared in the seventies of the XIX century in East Anglia. The breed originated from different kinds of terriers, which were the ancestors of Irish and Yorkshire terriers. In addition, among their ancestors could be extinct nowadays a trampington-terrier.

It should be noted that the Norwich Terrier has also common roots with Norfolk Terrier. Previously, these two dogs were one breed with an excellent shape of the ears. The English Kennel Club only in 1964 divided Norfolk Terrier and Norwich Terrier into 2 breeds, and 15 years later the American Kennel Club followed suit. Norvich had small protruding ears, while Norfolk had hanging ears.

The breed of Norwich Terrier was actively used for hunting foxes, hares and rodents. In some countries, it is still actively used as a hunter, although most of the owners keep it as a companion.

Appearance

Norwich Terrier is a dog of small, medium size, reaching at the withers of 26 cm with a weight of 5 kg. It is a stocky, dense, firmly built dog of compact build with short limbs and back, a long rib cage, developed musculature.

The animal has an elongated cuneiform muzzle, almond-shaped dark eyes. The tail can be two-thirds docked.

Coat color can be wheat, gray, red, black and grizzly, according to the standard. White marks are a disadvantage, while scars that were obtained on the hunt are permissible. On the dog's body, the wool is tough. On the head and ears, it is short and smooth, whereas on the neck and shoulders it forms a neat collar.

Character and temperament

Norwich Terrier is a terrific companion. This energetic, active, faithful, inquisitive and friendly dog. This breed has an incredibly easy character, at the same time it gets along well with young children and will be a wonderful companion for them. But Norwich Terrier, the price of which is not so small, still better for families with children of school age who already understand how to treat a dog better.

It's a watchful and brave breed that bark a lot. At the same time the dog is not at all aggressive, she loves everyone around, therefore, although your pet will be a fine watchman, a guard will not come out of him.

Norwich Terrier easily finds a common language with the rest of the dogs, while living can even with a cat (in conditions of true socialization). In this case, do not forget that this hunting breed will constantly chase small animals, including hamsters, rats or unfamiliar cats.

Diseases

In general, this is a fairly healthy breed. Norwich Terriers live up to 16 years, although, like other breeds, are prone to certain diseases. Basically in the representatives of this breed there is a brachycephalic syndrome (soft elongated sky), a collapse of the trachea, as well as epilepsy.

Care and maintenance

The dog can be kept in a fenced area in the countryside, as well as in an apartment or house, where the breed of Norwich Terrier will also be comfortable. Nurseries often offer already vaccinated puppies, so at the very beginning of this issue it will be possible not to touch.

This dog in the care is pretty simple. It is enough to comb it once a week, and during moulting - every day. Living at home, the dog does not get dirty much, and it does not entangle hair, therefore, it can be bathed as needed, although not more often than once in 2 months.

Keep a pet clean will allow a very useful procedure, which is called trimming (this is pulling out dead skin). The dog's coat after him remains for a long time in a neat and well-groomed condition.

Trimming is best done in the cabin, as for the independent procedure it is necessary to learn from a specialist.

Since Norwich Terriers are incredibly energetic dogs, they need to create suitable conditions for active spending time, spend a lot of time with them and take long walks in the fresh air.

Training

It should be noted that such puppies are very suitable for training. Norwich Terrier is very smart, although the owner likes to please. But such an independent dog is still capable of showing obstinacy. In order for training to be successful, it is important to be consistent and patient. This puppy needs a strong leader, able to control the situation and establish clear rules.

Norwich Terrier needs early socialization: constantly invite friends, familiarize the dog with neighbors, various life situations and animals, walk in parks. With a loving and attentive owner, the dog will grow into a magnificent and well-bred companion for the whole family.

This mischievous animal is often called "a huge dog in a small volume": in fact, it does not concede to its large brethren in anything, and in some ways even surpasses them. This is a true friend with a selflessly loving and courageous heart!
