Can not access the USB flash drive (denied access): how to fix the error?

Modern USB-drives are not insured against errors due to a variety of reasons. Sometimes the system can give a message that there is no access to the flash drive (denied access), although the user firmly believes that everything is in order with the device. Why this situation arises and how to deal with this problem, read on.

System message "Can not access the USB flash drive. Access Denied ": reasons for the appearance

The very failure of this nature can be caused by the same software problems, physical damage to the drive, or (worse) by microcontroller errors, viruses, and so on.

In principle, it is customary to include flash memory cards today. With them, things are simpler. On any adapter there is a special switch that turns the device into a protected mode. In other words, you can see the device and everything that is on it, but you can not make any purposeful actions. The simplest solution is to turn off the lock.

Worse is with viruses or damage to the file system due to software failures due to a sudden power outage of the computer, improper removal of the drive from the port, etc. In this case, the file system can be converted to RAW format. It will have to be returned to its original form via low-level formatting. But, as a rule, the problem is not even that.

What should I do first?

When the flash drive writes "Denied access", this should be understood as a kind of ban, which should be removed. Usually you can try to perform only one action, which will be discussed below. But it's impossible to guarantee access to the device even with its help. Therefore, the easiest way to solve the problem is to format the drive. Of course, if it does not have a critically important information for the user.

You can do this from the standard "Explorer" by calling the corresponding function in the right-click menu.

Autorun Virus

Sometimes the appearance of warnings that there is no access to the flash drive (denied access) may be due to the impact of viruses. One of those is the threat of Autorun.inf, which is very often present in illegal software distributions.

Actually, the virus itself replaces the standard Windows service responsible for automatically recognizing the connected media and selecting an action. As already understood, to eliminate the consequences of its impact will have to make a full scan of the system. In this case, even if you use a regular antivirus, it is better not to use SMART technology, which in most cases is enabled by default. After all, it is aimed at scanning objects that are vital for the operation of the system, in an accelerated mode. Therefore, it is better to use in-depth analysis.

In addition, the most preferable way out of this situation will be the use of independent disk utilities with the generic name Rescue Disk. They have their own downloadable interface. It starts before Windows commands are executed. And it is these scanners that are able to find even those viruses that have penetrated too deeply into the system or have settled in the RAM.

Flash drive. Access denied. What to do: the system registry

Now we will consider the most actual method of eliminating such a problem. If, for some reason, the system says that access to the flash drive is denied, Windows 7 and its similar systems can offer a cardinal method of fixing the problem. This will require intervention in the registry. To his editor, you can get access through the regedit command in the "Run" console (Win + R).

Through the HKCU branch, you should go to the MountPoints2 section, where you can see the Shell subdirectory when you click on the problem device. Apparently, in the right window, the file that corresponds to the automatic launch will not be visible. So just delete the Shell partition, and then try to open the drive. If there was an original autorun file on it, it might be hidden. We expose the display of hidden objects in the "Explorer" and change the attributes. Then everything will pass without problems.

Note! This applies only to devices with autorun, which is responsible for the file that is directly on them. In general, you can try to remove the disk encryption or even enter the "Device Manager", remove the USB controller (not the drivers, namely the device). Then you must install it again when rebooting, using for this not the database of the system, but only the driver downloaded from the manufacturer's site.

You can do even easier, when restarting using the utility Driver Booster. It will determine the type of device itself, download the latest driver and integrate it into the system without external involvement.

Tips for last

But in the simplest case, when the system issues a warning that for some reason there is no access to the flash drive (denied access), you can use even the usual formatting. If, of course, Windows sees the drive, and there is no information critical to the user. In all other cases, the nature of the failure should be carefully studied. And you do not need to touch the system registry.
