Calculation of the cubature of lumber: basic rules

In the design of any structure, special attention is paid to the calculation of building materials, since this will determine the cost of the object. The greatest complexity, especially for non-specialists, is usually the calculation of the cubic capacity of sawnwood, because they are not sold by weight or by the piece. A simple buyer often does not know that the value of sawn timber is formed taking into account their quality, but here the role is played by breed, grade, degree of processing and even length.

What should I consider when buying lumber?

The quality of sawn timber is regulated by a set of GOSTs, normative documents and technical conditions, with which individual developers, of course, are not familiar. This is what sellers of this category of building materials use. Therefore, even if you manage to correctly calculate the cubic capacity of sawn timber, it is not yet a fact that you will buy a quality product, and its quantity will correspond to that for which you paid the money. In order not to get into an unpleasant situation, you need to know the basic rules for measuring the most common types of sawn timber.

Learning to correctly calculate

In the woodworking industry, there are two concepts of a cubic meter - dense and folding. The prices of sawn timber in price lists are indicated for a dense cubic meter, but unscrupulous sellers can sell sawn timber with storage cubic meters, in which case you will have to pay some money for air. To prevent this from happening, the storage cubic meters should be converted into dense cubic meters. The current regulations provide for the grading of the slab into two categories, starting from its length, up to 2 m and more than 2 m. The spit is stacked by alternating thick and thin ends, and also the mound surface. Stacking should be done as tightly as possible. Stacks should have the same height and right angles. Multiplying the length, width and height of the stack, we get the storage cubic capacity. Now it must be translated into a tight cubature. Although the calculation will be approximate, it will help to establish the true volume of lumber. Approximately it looks like this: folding / dense = 1.3 / 1 m 3 .

Calculation of cubic capacity

It is much easier to calculate the cubature of the edged board or timber, since these kinds of sawn timber have clear shapes, so they are packed tightly in packages, and 1 cubic meter corresponds to its value. These materials need to measure the length, height and width - this will be the volume of one unit, having calculated which, it is already possible to easily calculate the cubing of lumber needed for purchase. To do this, multiply the result by the required number of elements. Naturally, this formula will be valid only if each unit of material has the same linear dimensions.

Calculation of the volume of roundwood

It is more difficult to calculate the volume of roundwood - there's no need to do this with roulette and calculators, so these calculations are made through special tables or software products. Since logs can differ in their size, it is necessary to measure each individual element. So, the calculation of the cubic capacity of sawn timber of this type is made as follows: the length of the log and its diameter are measured from the side where it is smaller. The received data are entered in the special electronic calculator or are searched in the table. The result is the volume of one log.
