Glaucoma: treatment at the first signs of the disease

What is glaucoma? Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease, against which there is increased intraocular pressure, as well as damage to the optic nerve. When glaucoma occurs a partial or complete onset of blindness.

The consequences that glaucoma brings with it are irreversible, since the loss of the optic nerve occurs, and it will be impossible to return vision in the future.

Glaucoma is a very common problem, mainly in people aged 40 and over. But such a disease is not excluded in young people, as well as in newborns.

Intraocular pressure is measured with a tonometer. Each person has their own pressure standards, but mostly they range from 16 to 25 mm Hg. The tonometer shows the constancy of the ratio of the liquid produced by the eye and the fluid flowing out of the eye.

The following phenomena can serve as the causes of increased intraocular pressure: the formation of intraocular fluid in large quantities; Disruption of intraocular fluid withdrawal.

It can be concluded that with fluid retention in the eye there is an increase in intraocular pressure, which results in loss of the optic nerve. If this disease is present, close relatives should be inspected regularly. Glaucoma, whose treatment began on time, will help prevent terrible consequences.

Symptoms of glaucoma: during examination, a certain change in the optic nerve can be detected, while narrowing of the visual field is observed; When measuring the intraocular pressure, its increase is revealed.

Specialists distinguish several varieties of glaucoma. The most common form is open-angle glaucoma. Treatment should start with the very first alarming signs, since with this type of glaucoma there are no clearly pronounced symptoms, intraocular pressure is not felt by a person, but the optic nerve is already being destroyed.

Another type of glaucoma is an angle-closure glaucoma. This form is usually manifested in the form of seizures. Signs of attacks: a sharp increase in intraocular pressure, pain in the eyes, weakness, nausea, sometimes vomiting. There is a sharp deterioration in the sight of the diseased eye. Often such symptoms are confused with signs of migraine, so if your parents had glaucoma, treatment and examination should be done at the initial stage (with the first symptoms).

In rare cases, congenital glaucoma occurs. Treatment of this type in the early stages of the disease can to some extent save the optic nerve. But with minor nerve damage, glaucoma may not be detected at an early stage, which can lead to loss of vision.

Due to inflammatory, vascular and other eye diseases , secondary glaucoma may occur. The cause of secondary glaucoma is a violation of the outflow of fluid inside the eye. Also, the destruction of the optic nerve, visual impairment, narrowing of the field of vision, can be noted at normal intraocular pressure.

Regardless of which form of glaucoma is found in the patient, he needs a dispensary treatment.
