"Benz-Daimler" (Daimler-Benz) - German automotive concern

The German concern Benz-Daimler, whose main activity is the production of cars, has a long history. It arose when the two companies merged. One of them was the firm Benz, and the second was Daimler-Motoren Gesellschaft. At the beginning of their history, these producers developed separately. In this case, the companies that created K. Benz and G. Daimler, had a great success. However, in 1926 they merged. So the history of concern Daimler-Benz began. Today, this German automaker, whose headquarters is in Stuttgart, produces the famous "Mercedes" brand.

A New Era of Automotive Industry

Many of us well know the name of Karl Benz. This German engineer and inventor is rightly considered a pioneer in the production of machines. The first Benz car was released in 1885. The German engineer not only developed, but also built the world's first Benz engine, which works with an internal combustion engine.

The patent for his offspring, he received 29.01.1886. This date is still considered the beginning of the era of automotive industry.

Create a new company

Three years later, the invention of a German engineer was presented in Paris. It was here that in 1889 there was an automobile exhibition, which also demonstrated the products of the company Daimler. But, unfortunately, the sales volumes after that did not rise. Everything changed in 1890, when a number of German companies became interested in the production of the Benz car. At the same time, a company was founded that produced only its offspring.

In subsequent years, the German inventor did not stop working on new projects. The result of his efforts was the development of a 2-cylinder engine in a horizontal arrangement. Already by 1900 the company "Benz" won a high popularity among buyers. This was made possible by the fact that the cars produced by her had high sports results.

Gottlieb Daimler

This famous industrial designer and engineer is also a significant figure in the automotive industry. Gottlieb Daimler, together with his business partner, Wilhelm Maybach, founded a small engine production. It was located in the city of Cannstadt.

Only on the basis of his own theoretical calculations, Daimler created a single-cylinder engine, with a horsepower of half horsepower. The famous engineer did not trust the power of electricity. That's why the engine was equipped with an ignition, the principle of operation of which is very similar to that found in modern diesel engines.

The newly invented mechanism was installed on a specially designed two-wheeled unit made of wood. It was the first motorcycle in history.

In 1889, the company Daimler and Maybach almost from scratch built its first car. At the same time, parts of other vehicles were not used for the first time in the new car. The first Daimler brand was capable of reaching speeds of up to ten miles per hour.

In 1890, Gottlieb Daimler founded the company Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG). In the same period, its logo was created in the form of a famous three-pointed star. According to the legend of the trade mark, this sign meant the most powerful and best motors in the air, on the ground and in the water.

A new stage in the development of the company

The famous inventor and head of the company DMG died in 1900. After his death, the family business was continued by son Paul. The management of the company was undertaken by Wilhelm Maybach. Being a great engineer, he started developing a new car. In this machine, the usual arrangement of all the parts was provided.

So, the radiator and the engine were installed under the hood, and the drive was carried out on the rear wheels using a gear-box gearbox. The car was installed four-cylinder engine, the power of which was 35 horsepower. This model was a two-seater race car and was named after the daughter of the Austrian co-owner of the company - Mercedes. This car had a wide wheelbase, a low center of gravity and an inclined steering column. Another of its distinguishing feature was the cooler "honeycomb". The unit weighed 900 kilograms and was able to reach speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour.

Combining efforts

Until a certain time, the names of Benz and Daimler were related to various companies competing with each other. However, the period after the end of World War I became difficult for both firms. These were the times when the level of sales of cars fell to the lowest level. In order to improve the situation, the producers decided to combine their efforts. In 1924, the companies signed an agreement on the termination of competition and the beginning of cooperation. Two years later, a merger of firms occurred. In the world market there was a new company - Daimler-Benz AG. This cooperation proved to be quite strong and the longest in the history of the automotive industry. The production of machines by the concern "Benz-Daimler" was carried out until 1998.

Joint models

Already from the very beginning of its existence the newly established company began its activity. "Mercedes-Benz" is a new brand, which was presented to consumers.

The first car produced by the newly created company Benz-Daimler was the car of the brand K. This unit was equipped with an engine that had a capacity of 160 horsepower, the volume of which was 6.2 liters. Further on, the market was presented to the Mercedes SSK and SSCL. The designer of these two models was Hans Niebel.

In addition, in addition to the sports car concern Benz-Daimler offered users convertibles, as well as mass-produced car with a body that is adapted to the rally.

Successful work

Before the Second World War, the German industrial company managed to produce a number of models that won great popularity among consumers. This is Mercedes SSK. It was released in 1930. The model "Mercedes 770", which was published in 1934, was also popular. Then the first diesel-powered car was also launched.

But special fame went to model 18-80 LS. This Mercedes, known as Nürburg 460. The release of this machine, equipped with an 8-cylinder engine, was implemented in 1928. The maximum engine power of this car was 80 horsepower. The engine speed at that time was 3400 per minute.

In the 30s, production of roadster cars of brands 500K and 540K was also established. In the period from 1936 to 1940 mass production of the first model of diesel "Mercedes-Benz 260D" was carried out. These machines were equipped with an engine capacity of 45 horsepower and had a volume of 2.5 liters.

In 1937, the car model 320 was offered by the company in two versions - a convertible and a coupe. Some of these cars, which had a 3.4-liter engine, found their application in the German army. In this period, in addition to passenger cars, the company also set up production of trucks.

The post-war period

Concern "Benz-Daimler" continued its work after the end of hostilities. The company quickly rebuilt the destroyed factories and already in 1947 released a new model - 170. This Mercedes was equipped with a four-cylinder engine, the power of which was 52 horsepower.

Soon another consumer model was released to the consumer market, which differed radically from all previous ones. This is a Mercedes 300 limousine. The car was designed on a frame in the form of crossed beams. On this "Mercedes" was installed a 6-cylinder engine, the power of which was 115 horsepower. Further on, the model 219 was exhibited on the market. This car had a lower quality, which enabled the company to manufacture cars that were relatively inexpensive.

Winged model

Of the large number of cars produced by the concern "Benz-Daimler", the model "Mercedes 300 SL Coupe" is especially noteworthy. Designers equipped this machine with a kind of "winged" doors that open with a part of the roof. It was the first sports car created after the war. In 1954, an unusual vehicle was released in a new road version.

Among other cars, the 300 SL model Coupe stands out not only for unusual doors, but also for a powerful 215 horsepower engine. The car was able to reach speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour.

In 1957, the company established a new model 300 SL Roadster, of which Elvis Presley himself was one of the owners.

Prestige cars of the company

The history of the firm "Benz-Daimler" has many iconic models. The most prestigious of them are united in the S-class. The most comfortable cars can be identified by marking "C". The company produced its first model of this line in 1993. But business-class cars are manufactured with the symbol "E".

To date, many Mercedes-Benz cars are produced. But, regardless of belonging to a particular class, they are all perfectly assembled and reliable, which allows the company to maintain a high reputation in the market.

Automotive Super Giant

In 1998 there was a significant event. The American company Chrysler Corporation and the European car manufacturer Mercedes have created a new joint concern. As a result, a new company was formed. Her name sounded like Daimler Chrysler. This transaction was considered very profitable and compared with marriage, made in heaven. And no wonder. After all, the company "Chrysler" at this time was highly profitable, and the firm "Daimler-Benz" was known as the world leader in the production of very prestigious and expensive cars. That's why the newly created corporation began to be considered a world supergiant.

However, the company "Daimler Chrysler" existed only ten years. This was caused by the unstable financial condition of American partners. To improve the situation, the management of the German car manufacturer sold part of the shares owned by the company "Chrysler". After that, the concern changed its name to Daimler AG. And the main brand of this well-known manufacturer was the Mercedes-Benz car.

Modern brands

German car models, manufactured to date by Daimler AG, in comparison with their predecessors, have a lower fuel consumption. In addition, they are very reliable, safe, and also still popular among those buyers who dream of a prestigious car.

It is worth noting the fact that the company's cars have always distinguished a large interior space. In such a cabin with comfort is a company of friends, a large family or a high-ranking official. In addition, in these cars, even the longest travels are perfectly tolerated.

To date, the most popular cars are those that belong to the low price category and belong to the C and E classes. However, more prestigious brands do not lose their positions either. So, cars of G, S and M classes are often purchased by heads of administrations and directors of large firms.

The range of "Mercedes" includes mini-cars. These are class A cars that are compact in size while maintaining high quality and safety.

For the most demanding buyers, a tuning unit has been created and is working. Its main specialization is the creation of high-power versions of the car. Specialists of the division manually create engines AMG. These motors are distinguished by a label, on which stands the signature of the engineer who created them.

Today the corporation is located in a whole complex of institutions, the most significant of which is the "Mercedes-Benz" museum. Here, in the city of Stuttgart (Germany), is the headquarters of the company.

Famous for the whole world, the German concern is striving to create cars that have a long life and high productivity. That is why all the cars on the hood of which is so familiar to us three-pointed star, as before, are considered the most prestigious on our planet. In September 2011, the company celebrated the one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary of the creation of the brand, which has such a long and rich history.
