The genus Barberry has many different types of thorny evergreen and deciduous shrubs. Flowers they have golden and small, fruits of different shapes and colors (many varieties are edible). Landscaping designers in the decoration of household plots often use barberry. Cultivation of this shrubbery and the creation of a hedge from it finds an increasing number of fans. There are several hundred varieties of this plant. An unpretentious, drought-resistant, frost-resistant and strong wind - such is barberry. Cultivation of it thanks to these properties has become popular all over the world.

Methods of cultivation

Reproduction of barberry is possible by means of seeds, cuttings or by dividing a bush. When using any method, the main thing is to know how to properly choose the planting material.

Seed method

It will take a long time to dilute barbaris semenically. Fruits are collected, pressed, squeezed through a sieve. Next, wash and dry until friable. As a result, seeds are obtained ready for planting. It is better to sow them in autumn, before strenuous use, stratification is carried out. Two years at all do not touch the barberries that have risen from the seeds, the cultivation takes place in the school for the next two or three years, where they are transplanted.

Reproduction by vegetative methods is much faster and easier. We choose a sunny place and plant a barberry. Cultivation in a small darkening is permissible, the main thing is that there should be no stagnation of water.

Cutting

For cutting cuttings use sharp and clean tools: garden knives, pruners or scissors. In some species, shoots are used as a seedling material, which, when bent, breaks with a crunch. Green branches of the new generation are cut and divided into blocks up to 10 cm long. On each segment there should be two nodes and one interstice. The top of the cut is cut horizontally, and the bottom - at an angle of 45 °. The lower leaves are completely removed, and the upper ones are truncated in half. If the shoots have passed the stage of lignification, then the blanks are made at the end of the fall leaf and are removed to a cool cellar until spring. In the boxes with prepared soil from peat and sand (1: 3), barberry is planted.

Growing in a greenhouse takes from one to two years with regular watering and spraying. Next, a selection of strong shoots and they are transplanted to a permanent place. Weak ones leave for another year.

Shrub Section

To divide the plant, a five-year planting is excavated. With special care cut the bush together with the roots into two or three parts. Planted in the allotted places and watered with a preparation for rooting. This procedure is allowed only in early spring. If the bush shoots straight from the ground, then this method of reproduction does not apply to it.

Care

It consists of several stages: watering, mulching, feeding. Water is required only during planting and once a week after planting. Before mulching, loosen the ground. For mulch use sawdust, a shell of nuts, peat. The recommended mulching height is more than five centimeters. For the second year, fertilizers with nitrogen, slurry or bird droppings are applied 6 times per season. During the ovary buds are fed with granulated complex fertilizers with microelements. Autumn around the bushes scatter superphosphate and potassium fertilizer.
