Zaporozhye State Medical University is a multidisciplinary higher educational institution of the IV level of accreditation, which has the right of autonomous administration. The institution is considered one of the oldest universities in Ukraine, where people can get a high-quality medical education.

Excursion to the history

In 1903, the Higher Women's Courses were created in Odessa. Since that time the history of the present university begins. In 1959, the institution from Odessa was transferred to Zaporozhye, where he was given another name - the Zaporozhye Pharmaceutical Institute. In 1964, he opened a medical faculty, in which there is both full-time and part-time forms of education. In 1969 this institution received a new name - the Zaporozhye Medical Institute. Until 1972, the day and evening training of students was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine. In 1972 the faculty for the training of foreign citizens was opened. Already in 1974, internships taught future doctors in 15 specialties.

Our days

Zaporizhzhya Medical University continues to develop and today, the learning process is improved, new specialties are introduced. A highly qualified staff of teachers constantly works to multiply and accumulate the scientific potential of the country. Graduates successfully find work in all regions of Ukraine and foreign countries. ZSMU (Zaporizhzhya State Medical University) is a practically closed campus with many educational buildings, clinics, hostels, libraries, student cafes and a stadium. Studgorodok surrounds the city park "Rainbow", where mass events, exhibitions, broadcast of football matches, the annual Pokrovskaya Fair, dedicated to the celebration of the City Day , are held constantly . In addition, the picturesque banks of the Dnieper River, which are located near the university, create a favorable climate for training and excellent conditions for active recreation for students.

First Faculty of Medicine

The first medical faculty prepares doctors-stomatologists and doctors on specialties "stomatology" and "medical business". The form of training is full-time, the terms of training: 5 years in the specialty "dentistry", "medical business" - 6 years with the possibility of further internship in the following primary specializations:

• Family medicine;
• obstetrics and gynecology;
• Intensive therapy and anesthesiology;
• Emergency medicine;
• neurosurgery;
• Traumatology and orthopedics;
• surgery;
• ophthalmology;
• Forensic-medical examination;
• psychiatry;
• urology;
• Otolaryngology and others.

All students of ZSMU (Zaporozhye) have the opportunity to practice not only in their native city, but also in medical institutions of foreign countries. To date, the faculty includes about 25 chairs, among the faculty are honored workers of science and technology of Ukraine, laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine, honored doctors of Ukraine, professors, candidates of sciences.

Second Medical Faculty

The second medical faculty trains students in the following specialties:

• Pediatrics. The form of training is full-time, the term of study is 6 years, followed by internship in such primary specializations: pediatrics, children's surgery, pediatric anesthesiology, children's otorhinolaryngology, and neonatology.
• Laboratory diagnostics. Educational and qualification level - bachelor, qualification - doctor-laboratory assistant. Full-time form of education. Bachelors - 4 years of study, masters - 1,5 years.

Of the 466 students enrolled in the faculty, there are 2 registered scholarship holders, about 10% are excellent students. Zaporozhye Medical University gives every student the opportunity to conduct research work as part of the student community.

First Pharmaceutical Faculty

The first pharmaceutical faculty conducts the preparation of pharmacists and pharmacists-cosmetologists for two popular specialties: "pharmacy" and "technology of perfumery and cosmetics (TPCS)." The duration of training for full-time students is 5 years.

The faculty includes the following departments:

• Biochemistry and laboratory diagnostics;
• Department of Analytical Chemistry;
• Department of Drug Technology;
• Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry;
• Department of Clinical Pharmacology, etc.

Out of 900 people, students at this faculty, about 12% of excellent students, 3 laureates of nominal scholarships, 30 people were awarded with a scholarship of the mayor of Zaporizhzhya. All students of the faculty have the opportunity to visit modern libraries, whose reading rooms are connected to the Uran system.

Second Pharmaceutical Faculty

At this faculty pharmacists and pharmacists-cosmetologists of the correspondence form of training are prepared. The length of the training depends on the basic education. Applicants who received secondary or specialized secondary education entering the Zaporizhzhya Medical University on the basis of certificates or entrance examinations will need to study for 5.5 years; Persons who received secondary medical education - 5 years; 4,5 years - persons with average pharmacological education and bachelors in the specialty "medicine"; 3 years - people with higher medical education.

Preparation of pharmacists and pharmacists-cosmetologists is carried out by highly qualified teachers, including many doctors of science, professors, candidates of sciences and associate professors. Modern information and logistical support of the educational process ensures a high level of training.

First International Faculty

For foreign students wishing to enroll in the Zaporizhzhya Medical University, since 1973 the faculty of pre-university training has been functioning for further education in the country's higher education institutions in the fields of medical and biological profile.

The goal of the training is the possibility of mastering Ukrainian and Russian languages in a volume that allows them to communicate freely in all fields of activity. In addition to languages, students study mathematics, computer science, biology, physics, chemistry and regional studies. Many teachers have been trained in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Training at the courses greatly facilitates entering the medical university of Zaporozhye and universities of Ukraine as a whole.

In order to improve the assimilation of the material, students are engaged in groups of 8 people, each provided with textbooks and teaching aids. Duration of training is 1 year.

Second International Faculty

The second international faculty prepares specialists and masters in the following areas:

• "Pediatrics", "medical business" - a full-time form of training, the duration of training - 6 years.
• "Pharmacy", "TPKS" - full-time and part-time forms of study, the term of study is 5 years.

Postgraduate education of specialists includes clinical residency lasting from 2 to 5 years, internship from 1 year and postgraduate study from 3 years.

Zaporozhye Medical University deservedly ranks first among Ukrainian universities in recruiting foreign students. Since the establishment, more than 5,000 specialists have been trained who come from other countries. Zaporozhye University successfully cooperates with 101 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa. Since 2002, foreigners have been trained in English.

Faculty of Postgraduate Education

At the faculty of postgraduate education, doctors, pharmacists, pediatricians and clinical residents are trained in the internship. The terms of training depend on the chosen specialty.

Masters training is conducted, also on the basis of faculty there are various courses of improvement of professional skill and thematic improvement.

Conditions of study, residence and leisure of students

The campus is located practically on the banks of the Dnieper, its territory is under round-the-clock security. The students of the junior courses take part in theoretical classes in the educational buildings located on the territory of the campus. Practical classes for senior students are most often held in clinics located in different parts of the city. Opposite the Oak Grove (park in the old part of Zaporozhye) is the university clinic, where the skill of future doctors is also honed.

The university hostels are able to accommodate 2900 students, each of them has rest rooms and an audience with Internet access. Living rooms 2- and 3-bed. In two buildings only foreigners live.

All conditions for sports are created for students: within the university there is a sports complex, near the academic buildings and hostels there is a stadium with a football field, athletics sectors, sports grounds. There are some reasons why ZSMU is more famous than many other universities in Ukraine. Medical achievements of professors and the rest of the teaching staff on the basis of the university can not be left without attention:

• The first in Ukraine transplantation of the heart and liver was performed thanks to Professor Nikonenko O. S.
• The first domestic endoprosthesis of the knee joint was developed by traumatology scientists of the University with the assistance of Motor Sich JSC. Endoprosthesis in its quality fully meets international standards, and its cost is much lower than that of foreign analogues.
