Wiese Island: history, climate, interesting facts

The land of Wiese is called a small land area with a cold arctic climate. It is an island in the northern part of the Kara Sea. On its territory there are no permanent settlements, except for the bases of scientists-researchers. The island of Wiese is a place on the edge of the world, where the human foot rarely steps.

Kara Sea

This name is appropriated to the marginal sea in the Arctic Ocean at the extreme north-eastern European and West Siberian coast, as well as the Taimyr Peninsula. It is customary to refer to the number of reservoirs of the Eurasian sub-basin in the Arctic basin. The latter belongs to the Arctic Ocean. The Kara Sea is almost completely outside the Arctic Circle, except for the southernmost part in the Ob Bay, which is relatively in the south. All the coasts of the reservoir are at the disposal of Russia.

Historical reference

The Kara Sea, where the island is located, has a long history. In 1736 Lieutenant Stepan Gavrilovich Malygin (commander in the western detachment of the second Kamchatka expedition) was instructed to make a cartographic description of the sea coasts from the Pechora to the Ob River. Thus, he passed the territory of the strait of the Yugorsky Shar, and at the mouth of the river Kara he was stopped by impassable ice. The lieutenant, together with the main members of the expedition, sailed to Obdorsk, leaving the ships for the winter with the twelve sailors. By the next summer, in 1737, Malygin changed the direction of the bots to the Ob river. He compiled a "Mercator map of the North Ocean ...", which is usually considered the first map to which the Yamal peninsula was inflicted . As a result, the sea was called Karsky because of the place where the crew spent the winter. In the period 1741-1742, the Lena detachment, part of the Great Northern Expedition, commanded by Khariton Laptev, described and charted the shores of the Taimyr Peninsula. During the process, the lieutenant-leader examined the site from the territory of the Great Taimyr Peninsula to Pyasina, and the discovery of the Nordenskiold Archipelago was made. In addition, the coasts were studied, which got their names in honor of Laptev. The navigator in the detachment (Semen Chelyuskin) described the territory of the eastern part of the coast near the Kara Sea, near the Vilkitsky Strait. An interesting fact is connected with it. In the extreme northern Asian point and at the same time the easternmost point on the coast of the Kara Sea, the section of Cape Chelyuskin converges .

The situation with ice

In a period that begins in October and ends in May, the reservoir, as a rule, should completely freeze. In comparison with what the Barents Sea looks like , Karskoe was called sailors - an "ice bag". The weather conditions here are quite specific. In its northern part, where all the pieces of glaciers swim in the ocean, everything is covered with a thick layer of ice.

How was the island of Wiese opened?

The Kara Sea, where the island is located, is quite severe. At the beginning of the 20th century, the ship with the name "Saint Anna", led by G. Brusilov, had to drift here. Four years later the ship was not lucky, and it drowned, but the navigator V.V. Albanov was saved by the navigator V.Albanov. In 1924, a Soviet explorer, an expert on the oceans, a meteorologist and a polar explorer Vladimir Vise studied the lines of a drifting ship, which was clamped among ice floes. Through the deviations of the flow, he made assumptions that all this is due to the existing island. An icebreaker ship named Georgiy Sedov, six years later, Vladimir Vise, a member of the expedition team led by O. Schmidt, descended to the future land of Wiese, which he had predicted. Since autumn 1945, the southern coast has been equipped with a hydrometeorological polar station, which is one of the most northern ones. At this point, as before, Earth Vize has no permanent settlers.

The island of Wiese is estimated to be 288 km square. Landscapes here are flat with the presence of low hills. Geologically, there is a lot of clay and sea sand in the earth. Because of how global warming works, the island of Vise is gradually collapsing. There are almost no plants due to the arctic climate.

Climate of the island

The island of Wiese has a hard climate, and the temperature in the period of the warmest weather there is slightly more than zero degrees. The territory is often covered with snow. The island of Wiese has the coldest temperature throughout the country. The absolute maximum temperature is observed in June-July (8 degrees Celsius).

Additional facts

Obolemov Sergey Ivanovich, who is the head of the meteorological station on the island, was awarded the prize of the Vysotsky Memory Foundation for courage and loyalty to the chosen cause. It happened about twelve years ago.
