Sonia Marmeladova - the main female image in the novel "Crime and Punishment"
Fyodor Dostoevsky is rightly considered an unrivaled connoisseur of the human soul. This writer as no one realized that every person is a separate world of passions, beliefs and hopes. Therefore, his characters make up the palette of the most vivid and diverse images of not only Russian, but world literature. One of them is Sonia Marmeladova. Characteristics and analysis of the heroine of the greatest psychological novel is devoted to this article.
The unique female image
The Marmeladov family occupies a special place in Dostoevsky's novel. Each of its members is experiencing its own tragedy. The theme of "humiliated and insulted" is also revealed in this work, but the image of the main character is incomparable in the power of suffering with no one else, even in the works of the great Russian writer. Therefore, it is unique in the literature.
Life story
Who is Sonia Marmeladova? Its character is reduced to the following qualities: sincerity, charity, kindness. The strength of each of them is extraordinary. And only the owner of the best human qualities is able to survive the tragedy that fell to her fate, and at the same time not to be hardened by the soul, not to lose her moral foundation.
The protagonist of the novel once meets in the tavern of a drunk man who has gone down, the stories of which cause laughter among those around him. Sonia Marmeladova is the daughter of this man. The life story of these people amazes Raskolnikov. And having met a girl, an idealist student is no longer able to stay away from the misfortune that affected this family. Poverty is not a vice, but poverty is a different matter. She humiliates a person and makes him go to a crime against morality. This is the tragedy of Marmeladov. His daughter went to the panel to feed the family. He was at that time somewhere "lying with a drunk". And from now on he began to drink even more fiercely, almost to insanity, infuriated his sick and tormented wife and inflicting pain on the already heart-beaten daughter. But the girl has an unusually loving and open mind. Otherwise, it is impossible to survive the torments experienced by Sonia Marmeladova.
Characteristic
Fallen women in society cause contempt. Sonia Marmeladova did not escape this fate either. The fact that prostitution for her was the only possible way to feed her father, stepmother and their small children, no one cares. And few people are able to comprehend the depth of others' suffering. For this, one must have either Raskolnikov's detached idealism, or the loving heart of his father. The sister of the protagonist also gets sympathetic to Sonya. However, such unsightly personalities as Luzhin and Lebezyatnikov are only capable of condemnation. And it should be said that these characters are collective images. There are many such persons at all times. But both of them, as well as Sonya Marmeladova herself, understand that she committed the greatest sin, has transgressed the law of morality. And to wash off from itself traces of a terrible vice to it it will be uneasy.
Raskolnikov
The image of Sonya Marmeladova is amazing in that, despite her grief and contempt of others, she is capable of true love. This is not about the earthly feeling, which more like a selfish passion, but about another, true, Christian. The girl has not lost the ability to sympathize. Perhaps, the fact is that she was not at the bottom of the social society for long? Or is it that noble spiritual qualities can not be killed? The author points to another reason.
On the evening when Raskolnikov confesses Sonya in her atrocity, she decides to share his fate with him. But first he must repent and come to the investigator with a confession. And before leaving Rodion Romanovich receives from the girl a cross, once belonged to Lizaveta. The one whose life was on the conscience of an ambitious student by accident, whose murder smashed to the already untenable idea of "the right to have." And from this act one can conclude that the forces of survival and not losing oneself to Sonia were imparted by faith. Only a Christian idea can save humanity. Only she alone has the right to exist.
In the epilogue
At the end of the work, the role that Sonya Marmeladova played in the fate of Raskolnikov becomes finally clear. "Crime and Punishment" is a novel that does not end with the recognition of the main character in a perfect crime. After all, it is still not a detective story, but a work that has the deepest idea that is relevant at all times.
Raskolnikov confesses everything. But even in penal servitude for a long time blames himself only for failing to realize his grandiose plans. Sonia accompanies him. It evokes sympathy among prisoners, while a strange student is just dislike. His soul is filled with suffering through his own unfulfilled fate. Her - love for him. And the day comes when Raskolnikov realizes guilt, understands to the end the meaning of those words that she once spoke to him. Before the release of another long seven years. But from the day of Raskolnikov's repentance a new story begins - "a gradual renewal of a person".
