Electromagnet with your own hands, or find a needle in a haystack

The question of how to make a magnet with your own hands, from time to time comes to any home craftsman. Sometimes it is necessary to collect the remains of metal chips after plumbing and other work or to clean the drilled narrow hole. If you permanently attach a screwdriver to the magnet, then after a while the screwdriver will itself begin to magnetize the screws and nails. Or maybe, in fact, you need to find a needle? Well, if not in a haystack, then accidentally fell on the carpet. The easiest way to do this is to make an electromagnet with your own hands. Moreover, for its production of complex and expensive parts is not required.

A simple electromagnet with its own hands can be made as follows. First you need to make a core for an electromagnet. For this, a great nail is perfect. It must be red-hot and wait until it cools down on its own. Next, remove the scale from the nail and bend it in half. To do this, simply put its ends on the wooden bars and hit the back of the hammer. This will lead to a significant bending of the nail, after which it will not be very difficult to bend it to the end. After you bent the nail, sharp part of the file saw off the tip and the nail head.

After this, you should make a coil. It consists of several parts. The neck is a rectangle measuring 37x48 mm. It must be cut out of paper. Also from the paper are cut two persistent corollas, which are rectangles 48x3 mm. Two rims in the form of a washer with an internal diameter of 7 mm, and the outer one - 19 mm, we draw on the cardboard and then carefully cut out.

For assembly, we take the pattern of the neck, apply a layer of glue to the places that do not touch the core. Then use a narrow side (37 mm) to wind the neck on the nail. It must move freely along the core up and down. Now we put on one rim on the top and bottom of the neck. Lubricate the glue stubborn corollas and reel them on the edges of the neck. We paste the rims to them.

After the glue dries, take 15-20 meters of the radio wire for windings with 0.1-0.2 mm insulation. We wind it on the reel. In this case, it is necessary to leave the ends of the wire 10 cm long each. It is necessary to reel up exactly, so that each turn lies strictly next to the previous one. The quality of the winding depends on how powerful the electromagnet will be. With their hands, the first layer of the winding will not be done very quickly, but the others will already go easily. It is desirable to wrap each row of winding with two layers of thin paper. After completing the winding of the coil, wrap it from above with an electrical tape. Both ends of the winding should be cleaned (remove insulation from them).

We connect the key and the battery to the electromagnet. We can say that the electromagnet has been made with its own hands.

For convenience, we suspend our electromagnet to the tap, which can be made from a designer, or simply tied to a stick. You can simply keep it in your hands. For a visual demonstration of the work of an electromagnet it is enough to bring it to any iron product and turn on the power with a key. The manufactured electromagnet will attract an iron object. It will stay on until the power is turned on (ie until the key is in the "on" position or until the battery is exhausted).

With the help of electromagnet technology, it is possible to lift large masses of loads without fasteners, both as one-piece, multiple and small. This saves a lot of time. Imagine how much time it takes to transfer 1,000 small iron objects from one place to another by your own, without using a powerful electromagnet. With their own hands a small team of workers will do this at best in a day, and an electromagnet can cope with such a task in one minute.
