When to plant lilies: tips for gardeners

Just starting to break up your flower garden, many gardeners ask questions about when to plant lilies and how to do it. Although the mentioned flowers can grow in the same place for a long time, any specialist will advise them to perform their transplant every few years. It is best, in their opinion, to do this in late summer or early spring, when the soil is already warm enough.

It should be noted that there is no unequivocal answer to the question of when to plant lilies. The term of this procedure is individual for each variety. So, lilies that give offspring for 10 years do not require frequent transplantation, and flowers with very fast growing bulbs need to be moved every year. The maximum length of stay of these plants in one place is in the range of three to four years. In addition, in adult flowers during transplantation it is necessary to separate formed daughter bulbs.

When to plant lilies

Late-fading plants are best exposed to the procedure under consideration in the middle of autumn: late September-mid-October. In this period, when the inflorescence has just faded, and the underground shoots of the lilies have gained strength, it is best to plant them. It is necessary to remove bulbs from the ground with great care, so as not to damage the tender root system. If she receives the slightest damage, after planting the lilies will develop very slowly and will be ill for a long time. Dug bulbs must either be stored in a dry, dark, cool place until the very spring, or planted in the soil.

How to Arrange Lilies in Autumn

First you need to carefully sort out the available plants: they must necessarily be healthy. The stem needs to be cut carefully, leaving from five to ten millimeters in the form of a small hemp. If the stalk is a bit rotten, then it can talk about various infections. In this case, it is carefully unscrewed from the bulb in a circular motion. Those who are interested, when planting lilies, should know that the rhizomes must be excavated after all the leaves of the plant have wilted. After this, you should carefully inspect the tubers and remove from their surface all the scales, decorated with brown spots. Purified rhizomes are recommended to stand for about 20 minutes in a strong solution of potassium permanganate, which completely destroys any fungal infection on the plant.

After the procedures, the bulbs are planted in the ground. The depth of the pit should be three times the height of the bulb itself, ie, the depth of the hole for a three-centimeter bulb is 9 cm. The bottom of the pit should be sprinkled with sand - to improve its drainage - and mulch with peat or compost.

Spring planting

Anyone who is interested, when planting lilies, should know that plants must necessarily be placed in well-warmed soil. That is why the procedure is advised to plan for the middle of spring, and not immediately after the onset of the first thaw. To make the "right" soil mixed in equal proportions rotted leaves, sand and turf. Such a land is favorable for the rapid development of the root system of lilies. The gardener will only provide the flowers with the right care, and one can enjoy the beauty of tender plants for several more years.
