What is tambour: the meaning and features of planning

Every resident of a private house will agree that the front door opens quite often. Go and go themselves owners, for example, in the garden or the garden, to work, study, also often look at guests, you need to release or let pets. Such manipulations with the entrance door imply penetration of cold or warm air into the dwelling, which, of course, is undesirable. To prevent such trouble, when building a house, a vestibule should be planned.

What is a tambour?

The tambour is a small space in its area between the first and second entrance door to the residential building, that is, between the outer and the inner. Usually it can have two or three people at the same time. It can store shoes or some small inventory. But the main function of these square meters is to prevent the penetration of cold air currents from the outside.

There are often cases when a vestibule in the house is not planned, since the owners of such housing do not consider it necessary to spend the area of the house on such a useless premises. There is an opinion that this is just an unnecessary storage that does not perform any useful functions. And to protect the house from cold air, the most insulated entrance metal door is installed . But this is fundamentally wrong.

Practical value of the tambour room

Experienced builders and owners of country houses do not need to explain what a tambour is. Each of them will say that this intermediate space between the doors is just necessary in order to:

  • In the cold season, to prevent and not let cold air into the living rooms;
  • Keep cool in the house in the hot weather during the operation of air conditioning devices;
  • Do not allow on cool days during the use of heating appliances for heating the street;
  • To detain and not let smoke and other unpleasant smells enter the house.

As planned tambour

This room can be planned in two ways:

  • Be built into the house in a single building;
  • Can be added additionally and look like a protruding part.

Metal tambour doors are usually located on the leeward side, at the same time they must be opened outwardly in accordance with safety requirements, and the useful area of this room in this case is not infringed. The floor in its level should be lower than the floor level of the house itself, again in order to better retain cold air currents. The floor covering must be safe, not slippery.

Quality insulation - a pledge of keeping the heat in the house

What is a tambour without reliable thermal insulation? Without this condition, this room will not fully fulfill its practical goals. Therefore, it is necessary to think about the insulation of the tambour with all the care. Depending on the material of the external wall, the tambour is insulated both inside and outside the street. For internal insulation, mineral wool, perlite or polystyrene can be used, for external - a heat-insulating layer with reinforcing mesh and subsequent plaster.

The question of which door to install in the vestibule should also be well thought out. The decision can be influenced by several factors:

  • In which climatic zone they live;
  • Whether the tambour is heated, or not;
  • What are the financial possibilities, and so on.

Can be installed as metal tambour doors, and from solid wood, as well as simple and even interior. But in the latter cases it is necessary to beat them well with heat-insulating material. Also make sure that there are no cracks, which in the future can pass cold air.

What to place inside the vestibule

This question depends on what the area of the room. If small, you can only put a shoe and hang a few hooks for clothes, umbrellas, keys, etc. If the vestibule is spacious, you can hang a mirror, install a small closet for things and inventory, ottoman, and leave space for a baby stroller or Sled. But do not forget about what a tambour is, what its true purpose is. This is not a warehouse or storeroom, but a space for creating a buffer between the cold air from the street and the heat coming from the house.
