Best adhesive for insulation: overview, features of choice and manufacturers
Thermal insulation is not just an additional measure of maintaining comfort in the house and a means of saving individual structures, but a regulatory requirement. Therefore, the approach to the organization of warming should be responsible and with knowledge of the nuances of this event. There is a wide range of materials for thermal insulation, but most of them are combined with adhesive mounting techniques. An alternative way is to fix on the fasteners, but this is more likely an exception to the rule. In this case, the glue itself for the heater is presented in a huge assortment, which may well complicate the choice in the eyes of the beginner.
Features of glue for thermal insulation
Such formulations have unique combinations of physical and operational properties, even against the background of building adhesives. In many respects this is due to the fact that the function of this tool converges with the tasks that the heater itself performs. In particular, such glue should provide at least a minimum value, but the same thermal insulation, vapor permeability, protection from moisture and at the same time be mechanically stable. As for the immediate task of mechanical retention of the target material, adhesion provided by special modifiers is responsible for it.
At the same time, the glue for insulation is ecologically clean. Since insulation panels and roll materials are often laid directly in living quarters, this requirement is one of the key. Exceptions are unless the facade means, but in this segment, manufacturers are trying to minimize the content of harmful components, although the general requirements for compounds for outdoor use are much higher.
Means for working with foam plastic
Under the general name of the foam plastic, a whole group of materials is concealed, which also includes polystyrene and extruded polystyrene. A feature of gluing such panels is the need to provide a high traction force. The form factor of a tiled insulation is difficult in terms of performing an adhesive function, so the main bet in choosing is done on this property. The ability of the glue to adhere to the adhesion can also be caused by the surface of the piling - especially the metal. In this case, it is necessary to abandon formulations that include gasoline, acetone and active solvents. These components not only reduce the adhesion, but also may adversely affect the state of the foam itself.
And what to glue the heater? In addition to the high adhesion strength, the presence of such qualities as physical durability, stable curing parameters, resistance to humidity and non-toxicity should be taken into account.
Means for mineral cotton wool
Minvata is also in some versions a tiled material, but the fibrous structure as such still increases adhesion, unlike foam. And yet, we should rely on the quality of the glue, which will ensure its strength and reliability. This will help the structure cope with dynamic loads, which are especially dangerous for basalt fibers. Therefore, a mechanically stable and hard glue for a heater is selected.
Mineral wool may not be sufficient to form a reliable protective structure, therefore, reinforcing layer is often used, and reinforcing layer - for example, in the form of a plastic mesh, which is used for plastering. Adhesive composition is formed by a three-component bond, which benefits in strength properties. Also for mineral wool, temperature differences and especially humidity are dangerous. Therefore, the composition should be resistant to moisture and have high vapor barrier properties.
Means for facade insulation
The installation of facade heat insulation is a more important task, as the material will have to withstand a whole range of external threats that are not present in the room. First of all, choose the means for such purposes is from the temperature-resistant series. At a minimum, the composition should be usable in the temperature range from -30 to 100 ° C. But the marking should also specify a separate quality of frost resistance, which means the ability of the glue to withstand the cold in a large number of freezing cycles without lowering the performance. If you plan to install on concrete or brick surfaces, then choose the adhesive for the insulation with increased adhesion, adhesion and hardening properties. It is desirable that the composition is also characterized by an improved moisture resistance - a class not lower than D4.
Manufacturers of glue for thermal insulation
One of the leaders in the segment is the Ceresit brand, which offers glue mixes for a wide range of applications. The company, in particular, produces modifications of the formulations specifically for facade insulation, which can be both fibrous mineral materials and expanded polystyrene.
Recently, the manufacturer Tytan has also become popular. Users note the advantages of the Styro line, thanks to which it is possible to glue to brick, aerated concrete, wood and other surfaces that initially reduce the adhesion effect.
Firm Soudal offers a good quality and cheap polyurethane adhesive for insulation, the price of which is on average 300-350 rubles. For a can of 750 ml. By the way, the same amount for more eminent manufacturers can cost 500-600 rubles. This, for example, relates to IVSIL products. True, this company provides a higher quality in the formulations, which are based on foreign polymer additives and fractionated sand.
How to choose the optimal composition?
Focus on 1-2 characteristics is not worth it. The approach should be comprehensive, because the quality, which is of little significance at the moment, can appear in the future. The best tactic of choice is to evaluate the properties that will prevent the risks of destruction of the insulation itself, as the renovation of the adhesive mass is not as costly as the complete reworking of the insulation layer. So, on what glue to glue the heater?
For household use it is desirable to choose environmentally friendly mixtures that have a vapor barrier property, which in the future will affect the general characteristics of the microclimate. Do not forget and soundproofing - modern adhesives effectively perform this task. As for external insulation, the protection from moisture, frost and mechanical resistance should come to the fore.
Consumption of glue paste
The volume of procurement is also an important parameter of choice. Of course, it is better to stock up the material with a stock, but preliminary calculations will help to determine more accurately the number of cans or bags. The standard consumption, which manufacturers indicate, is about 4-5 kg / m 2 .
If it is planned to create a reinforcing protective layer, this value can be increased by 1 kg. This is provided that the thickness of the applied adhesive is 3 mm. These calculations refer to dry mixtures, which are subsequently diluted with water. By the way, the standard packaging in this case is a bag of 25 kg. That is, one bag should be enough for an area of 5 m 2 .
If the balloon is used, the glue consumption for the insulation will be as follows: 125 ml / m 2 . Accordingly, a typical 750 ml cylinder will serve a surface of 6 m 2 .
Installation work
The prepared mortar is applied on the perimeter of the panel with strips, the width of which is 4-5 cm. It is desirable to make indentations from the edges of 3 cm. You can do the work with a spatula or scraper, applying a composition with small slaps. In order to increase the adhesion, you can also use a notched trowel - it will provide a wavy distribution of the mass, which will improve the adhesion to the surface.
If the adhesive for the insulation is planned to be used together with the reinforcing mesh, the layer thickness will need to be increased. However, the maximum thickness should not exceed 10 mm. Then the plate ready for planting is superimposed on the target area. For tight fixation, the material should be lightly tapped with a spatula handle. Between the insulation panels are always located butt-end, and the lateral sides will also be superfluous, too, treated with glue mass, so that no bridges of cold remain .
Alternative methods of gluing
As an alternative solution, you can offer such tools as PVA, "liquid" nails and mounting foam. The first option may well replace specialized tools, if it is a question of gluing thin panels to a smooth and adhesive-friendly base in the room. The mounting foam will ensure perfect coupling strength. If mechanical reliability is placed at the forefront, then it is worth giving preference to this option. But it should also be borne in mind that mounting foam will cause a lot of trouble if you need to dismantle the insulator. "Liquid" nails are also focused on creating a strong bond, but this glue for gluing the insulation can only be used outside the living quarters. This is due to the content of toxic components.
Conclusion
Practice shows that the most high-quality insulation coatings are formed under conditions when all components of the structure have approximately the same technical and operational properties. Following this principle, it can be concluded that polyurethane compounds with polymeric additives are more suitable for expanded polystyrene.
How, in this case, should there be glue for a heater based on mineral wool? It is desirable for this material to choose environmentally friendly dry mixtures in which the content of synthetic elements is minimized. And here it is necessary to distribute the directions of using two combinations. So, the use of foam plastic will be the most profitable in the composition of the facade, because it is not ideal in terms of environmental cleanliness. Conversely, mineral wool can be used in interior decoration of premises regardless of their functional purpose.
