What is a unedged board and where is it used?

Wood has been used in construction for many centuries. The popularity of products from it does not change. Only processing technologies change - and that is insignificant. Instead of sawing manually, electric saws are used, but most of the work with wood is still manual labor.

Even our ancestors used in the construction sawn timber on the planks - boards. Modern technologies have made it possible to make them more even, to develop a certain classification. At the first sawing of a log the unedged board turns out. Its name (from a technical point of view) suggests that there are remnants of bark on the lateral parts. Unedged board - the primary product of wood processing. It can be used for some rough jobs as well as for further processing.

Unedged board is divided into varieties:

  • 0 (A) grade - joiner board, which has no knots and other defects. It is often used in furniture production or in the manufacture of joinery.
  • 1 (B) grade - does not have rot, damage by wood bugs, blue, cracks. This material is used in construction work.
  • 2 (C) grade - review (the presence of uncircumcible bark) to 10% of the total area of the board. Used in works where the aesthetic characteristics of the material are unimportant (crates, rafters, etc.).

Depending on the grade, the price also changes. The cube of the unedged board of the 2nd grade costs much less than the high-grade material. In order to choose a quality material, you need to know what to look for. The material should not be warped: its shape can not resemble an arc, be twisted or roundish. A similar phenomenon occurs when the wood is stored and processed incorrectly. Unedged board must not have chipped and potholes. This will complicate its further processing, can worsen the appearance of the product.

Notice the number of knots. They bend the fibers, over time, bending both the board and the products from it. The smaller the knots, the better the quality of the board. It should not be on the surface of deep cracks. This can shorten the life of the material.

When ordering, you should know the thickness, width and length of the desired sawn timber. The usual thickness of the unedged board is 25, 30, 40, 50 mm, but if you need other parameters, individual manufacture is possible. The width of the board is usually standardized and is 150 mm, but here special parameters are possible. There are still uncalibrated boards. They have a fairly wide range of parameters. For example, in one batch there may be boards with a width of 120 and 150 mm. The length of any kind of material usually ranges from 4 to 6 meters. Of all these parameters and depending on the type of wood and the price is added.

Lumber, used for construction, most often made of coniferous species. This is due to their good performance and relatively low cost. For finishing use also deciduous tree species. These products are more expensive: wood is less common, and it is processed, as a rule, it is heavier. Is not an exception and the board is unedged. Price per cube of pine material is much lower than the same kind of board, but from linden.
