What can increase prolactin? Symptoms and treatment of hyperprolactinaemia

It's not a secret for anyone that a normal hormonal background is extremely important for the functioning of the body. And today many women are interested in the question of what can increase prolactin.

Main functions

Before you know which factors can increase prolactin, it is worth studying more information about the hormone itself and its functions. Prolactin is a biologically active protein substance that is produced in the back of the pituitary gland. This hormone is responsible mainly for the preparation of the breast for lactation and for the production of milk.

On average, the concentration of prolactin in the blood is about 15 ng / ml. It is interesting that in the blood it is ejected impulsively - a woman has about 14 such discharges per day.

Consequences of increased prolactin

In some cases, such changes in the hormonal background can be quite normal and natural. For example, pregnancy can increase prolactin. Of course, the level of the hormone is highest during lactation.

But if the increase is not related to the reproduction, it can lead to unpleasant consequences. For example, hyperprolactinemia is often the cause of female infertility, as it affects the menstrual cycle and can block the process of ovulation. Many women suffer from galactorrhea - spontaneous excretion of breast milk, the formation of which is not associated with fertilization. Sometimes such hormonal fluctuations lead to dryness of the vaginal mucosa.

By the way, the level of this hormone can increase in men. In representatives of the stronger sex, such a violation is often the cause of a decrease in sexual desire and even impotence.

What can increase prolactin?

As already mentioned, the reasons for increasing the amount of this hormone can be physiological. On the other hand, this pathology is often associated with very dangerous diseases.

First of all it is worth noting that prolactin can be increased by the tumor of the pituitary gland prolactinoma. In addition, the risk factors include trauma and mechanical damage to the hypothalamic-pituitary region, as well as sarcoidosis, cyst, and neurosyphilis. In some cases, the level of the hormone rises sharply after extensive surgical intervention.

The work of the endocrine system is of great importance in this case. Diseases of endocrine glands (for example, hypothyroidism) lead to a malfunction of the hormonal background, which often affects the secretion of prolactin.

Increase prolactin can and some medicines. In particular, this result is often the result of improper intake of hormonal drugs and drugs that block dopamine receptors (dopamine regulates the secretion of prolactin).

Elevated prolactin: treatment

Therapy depends on the cause of the increase in the level of the hormone. Therefore, the patient is completely diagnosed first. If the problem is associated with hypothyroidism, the woman is prescribed hormone replacement therapy. The level of prolactin is reduced with drugs containing bromocriptine (a substance blocking the synthesis of this hormone). In the presence of a tumor, surgical intervention is most often required.
