University ITMO: student feedback

International ITMO Programs

Comments on international cooperation are very numerous, and most come from foreign partners on the relatively high level of training specialists at the ITMO University.

The University of Ilmenau (Germany) works with the ITMO University in three directions: the production of systems of polymers and optical products, the production of injection molding through the use of software systems, the technologies of optical materials from polymers for lens, ophthalmic, diffraction, gradient and micro-optics. It is known that specialists in IT, mechanics, and optics are excellently trained, ITMO is one of the best known in Russia. Entering this school is not easy, especially for the most prestigious and strong specializations. It is necessary to have already a large enough base of knowledge and skills for the chosen specialty.

First-year students

Even if the applicant's entry went smoothly, it is not a fact that he will be lucky enough to receive a coveted diploma. The first mass sacking of lazy people takes place in the first year, and after the third one they are no longer lazy, but they are mediocre, since ITMO very much appreciates the reputation of the highest-quality manufacturer of specialists in these spheres of production. Therefore, for students and first-year students ITMO students are advised not to relax, learn a lot to work independently.

In ITMO there is correspondence, full-time and full-time education. There are paid and budgetary bases. Here it is necessary to touch the sensitive issue: in bribes ITMO was never caught, the verbal and written testimonies assure that it is unlikely at all. Assessments in ITMO are also exhibited in a special way. This system was adopted by very few universities, but it is fair, effective and does not hurt student self-esteem. This system is a point-rating. For each subject an estimate is made, consisting of the sum of accumulated grades during the semester, plus the one received for the exam. As an estimate is calculated, only the teacher of this discipline knows. After each session on the bulletin board a table with the names of students who are in the top 50 is posted. Naturally, this affects a lot: choosing a place of work, a scholarship and so on.

Joint master's programs with foreign universities provide a great choice, as ITMO very actively cooperates with foreign colleagues. The most complex faculties and the most interesting in this respect are CT (computer technology) and FTIP (information technology and programming). The strongest at the latter is the department of Parfyonov, where only winners of school olympiads come.

Leisure

In general, leisure time for students is closely connected with study and future profession, although there is a volunteer center, a rock club, and a dance studio, all kinds of festivals and competitions are held. The main difference between the ITMO students and the rest is the competitive focus. The team of this university became the champion of almost all the Olympiad programmers ACM ICPC, four times champion ICPC. The level of mastering programming languages is very, very high.

ITMO also cooperates with the Ministry of Defense, where the issues of creating software, modeling and many other fields of activity are solved, where knowledge and skills of programming are applied. The University is actively promoted in international rankings.

Dormitory

But here ITMO does not cope yet. This is not even a problem, but ITMO's misfortune. The hostel, the students' reviews are unanimous, just "killed", especially the old buildings. New, of course, in a normal state, but they are catastrophically small.

Communal conditions in all hostels are unsatisfactory. A huge problem is water, both hot and cold. Hot in general often does not happen. Cold flow is weak - this pressure. There are not many souls, they are only in the economic building. There is only one kitchen on the floor. Residents of the Interuniversity student campus and Vyazemsky lane, where the hostel is located at ITMO, the reviews leave negative. True, but there is a bonus - the presence of a gym and a room for tennis.

College

Gifted school students have a unique opportunity to enter ITMO University at the age of fifteen, after the ninth grade. On that is the faculty of ACT (secondary vocational education). Future students are accepted here after the eleventh grade, too. And they train qualified specialists in the field of IT. Specialties are acquired: computer programmer , information systems in economics, computer networks, automatic control systems.

Graduates of this faculty are always in demand as specialists in various areas of information technology. For example: in the development and testing of applications, the development and operation of information-analytical systems in the enterprise, as well as control systems, in the development and operation of databases, and corporate information systems, in the development of communication systems and complexes, in the operation and support of digital complexes, testing Electronics, in the development of microelectronics. Continuity of training

Nevertheless, the faculty has programs for continuing vocational education that allow college graduates to continue their studies at the University, at other faculties - higher education - from the third or second year, depending on how successful the student has been in college.
