Treatment of pharyngitis in children

Pharyngitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the throat, which is most common in children. Adults quite often neglect the symptoms of this disease, but in the case of children it is not worth the risk and should consult a pediatrician. The fact is that the immune system of children is weaker than in adults, and even such an "innocent" disease as pharyngitis can cause serious complications.

Distinguish catarrhal and granulosa pharyngitis. At first, only the mucous membrane of the pharynx inflames, while the second form of the disease spreads to the lymphadenoid elements. Depending on the course of the disease, acute and chronic forms of pharyngitis are isolated.

What are the causes of pharyngitis?

The most common causes of pharyngitis are various microbes (streptococci, pneumococci, staphylococci, influenza viruses and adenoviruses). The disease can develop and because of the infection in the areas adjacent to the throat, for example, with sinusitis, rhinitis or sinusitis. Therefore, pharyngitis often develops on the background of other diseases of the upper respiratory tract.

Pharyngitis can also be triggered by inhalation of cold air and exposure to the throat of chemical irritants, such as tobacco.

How to recognize pharyngitis in children?

The first signs of pharyngitis in children are manifested one or two days after infection. Typical symptoms of pharyngitis include:

  • Cough
  • Sore throat (especially when swallowing)
  • Pershing or itching in the throat
  • Redness of pharynx
  • Appearance of a whitish or yellowish coating on the tonsils
  • Hoarseness of voice
  • Watery eyes
  • Runny nose and nasal congestion
  • Minor enlargement of submandibular lymph nodes
  • Impairment of appetite
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Sometimes there is a slight increase in body temperature
  • If pharyngitis occurs against a background of another disease, then the symptoms listed above are added to the symptoms of another disease.

If your child has any of the above symptoms, consult a doctor. The correct diagnosis can be made only by a qualified specialist, so parents are strongly advised not to engage in self-treatment of the child. Without proper treatment, the chronic form of pharyngitis can develop, which is much more difficult to treat and can have serious complications.

Treatment of pharyngitis in children

The choice of how to treat pharyngitis in children depends on the symptoms and causes of the disease. The main methods of treatment include such procedures and activities:

  • Rinse throat 3-4 times a day with antiseptic and herbal solutions. Despite the fact that this method is one of the most effective, it is not suitable for very young children who do not know how to gargle.
  • Reception of antibacterial tablets, aerosols or lozenges.
  • The intake of vitamins and immunomodulating drugs.
  • Herbal Inhalation
  • Hot Foot Baths
  • Antibiotics are prescribed only in cases when pharyngitis develops against a background of a more severe disease (for example, scarlet fever or measles).
  • Physiotherapy
  • During treatment of pharyngitis, children are shown plenty of drink.
  • To alleviate the pain in the throat can also be some food products: soups, broths, potatoes, oatmeal. To facilitate swallowing, the products can be ground in a blender.

Prevention of pharyngitis

For the prevention of pharyngitis, general strengthening of the body, hardening and enhancement of immunity is recommended. It is necessary to treat other diseases of the upper respiratory tract in a timely manner. Also, avoid hypothermia and find the child in smoke-filled premises. Make sure that the air in the child's room is clean and damp.
