Irina began her literary activity quite late. And in general Tokmakova was not going to study literature. Everything happened very spontaneously. One day, Mr. Borgqvist came to Russia, a power engineer from Sweden. During the joint work, the man got to know the young translator more closely. He learned that Tokmakova Irina Petrovna is a fan of Swedish folk poetry. It is for this reason that the man sent Tokmakova a collection of children's Swedish songs, which was intended for Irina's son. The first literary translations of the poems were made for home use. However, Irina's husband - a well-known illustrator artist Lev Tokmakov - secretly transferred from his wife translations of poems to the publishing house. Leo also drew to illustrations translations. As a result, the publishing house published the work, and thus the first book by Tokmakova appeared, which was called "The bee dance is conducted." This event happened in 1961.

The children's book Tokmakova enjoyed quite a lot of popularity. This inspired Irina, and she decided to actively engage in literary activity.
