Titus - Emperor, who was recognized as a god

Many people know the phrase that money does not smell. For the first time, Titus (emperor) heard from her father. It was this phrase Vespasian said that his son was surprised that the ruler decided to make public toilets of Rome paid.

Titus was the son and receiver of Vespasian. In history they are usually called so, although their full names are completely identical (Titus Flavius Vespasian). To avoid confusion, one is called Vespasian Flavius (father), and the other Titus Flavius (son).

Who was Titus and what else did he have with his father, except for the name and the imperial title?

Youth

Born in the year 39 Titus Flavius. Vespasian was his father, and Domicilla was his mother. Titus became the first emperor of Rome, who inherited power from his own father. But it will happen much later. His young years he spent at the court of Claudius and Nero. This was due to the dangerous situation in Rome with the strengthening of the power of Agrippina.

After the death of Agrippina, Flavius was able to return to Rome. His military career began on the lands of Britain and Germany. Titus (emperor future) received the post of military tribune, and later took questura. Just started his career and his father.

During the disturbances in Judea, Nero sent Vespasian to settle the situation. Titus went with his father, he began to command the legion. In Judea, the young man became stronger as a military leader.

Being a power-hungry man, Tit wanted more. When in Rome the next struggle for power began, Titus decided to promote his father Vespasian to the emperors. At first he waited for time, then attracted to his side an influential Syrian ruler. His plan was a success, his father became emperor in 69 year.

Role in the Jewish War

Vespasian left Judea, entrusting the main command to his son. While in Judea, Titus began a relationship with the daughter of Herod Agrippa the First, beautiful Berenice. Later he took her with him to Rome. However, this did not prevent him from destroying Jerusalem. And he did it with great cruelty.

Titus returned to Rome with triumph, he became the co-ruler of his father. Officially, he took the post of the prefect of the Guard, but could interfere in government affairs, use tribun government.

Under the reign of Vespasian, Titus was suspicious and ruthless. He killed those who seemed to him dangerous for the power of his father. One day he invited the Consul of Aulus Tsetsina to his table and ordered him to be killed. The Romans did not like the excessive cruelty of Titus. In addition, they feared that his companion (a Jew from Judea) would later become Augustus.

Period of government

Vespasian died in 79 (1 century), and his place was taken by Titus. The public was negative about his government. To rectify the situation, the emperor took the following measures:

  • Scornfully punished informers;
  • Held luxurious games for the people;
  • Pardoned those who were accused of insulting the emperor.

Titus (Emperor of Rome) reformed the system of justice. Under his reign, it has become just such as it is being studied today as Roman law. With him, not a single Roman senator was arrested. Although before that, there was a practice not only to arrest them, but also to execute them. He also supported special programs, whose task was to provide assistance to victims during disasters.

Titus (emperor) completed his reign in the year 81. Death caught him suddenly. He died from fever in the same villa as Vespasian. At that time he was forty-two years old.

Titus was married twice, from his second marriage he had a daughter. Therefore, his successor was the younger brother Domitian.

Good memory of Titus

The reign of Titus lasted only two years. During this time (1st century), there were three most famous events in the history of Ancient Rome:

  1. The largest stadium in the world was built and opened - the Flavian Amphitheater, which everyone knows by the unofficial name of the Colosseum.
  2. There was an eruption of Vesuvius, because of which Pompeii died.
  3. Rome was almost completely destroyed by fire and rebuilt again.

For all his services after the death of Titus (the emperor) was deified by the Senate. The decision was made at a special hearing, which was held every time after the death of the ruler. The Senate decided how the descendants would relate to the deceased historical person. Some of them cursed (Nero, Caligula), while others deified. After this, the Romans did not change the Senate's decision.
