Who said that money does not smell?

People often say: "Money does not smell." Some understand these words literally, others put a portable meaning in them. What is the secret in this order of erased expression, if it does not lose its relevance for more than 20 centuries?

The smell of income is good ...

"Money does not smell" -this phraseology was born as an ironic commentary on the dialogue that took place between the Roman emperor Vespasian and his son Titus.

Once the Roman treasury was emptied, because there was not enough current income for Vespasian's numerous ambitious projects. The Emperor found a non-trivial way out of the situation, overlaid with the new tax newly arranged public latrines.

Titus began to reproach his father for the unaesthetic solution of the question. Instead of answering, Vespasian offered his son the money he received from the introduction of the new tax, and asked if he could smell them. Titus answered in the negative. Then the emperor satisfied with satisfaction that the source of money is urine.

This episode formed the basis of one of Juvenal's satirical works. The cynical expression "money does not smell" is a brief, prosaic version of one of his poetic lines.

Past the coinage you go to the workshop ...

Vespasian was definitely lucky that at the time of his dialogue with his son, the Romans had the metal money in the course. If the banknotes had been invented by that time, the world would have lost a famous saying.

Modern paper money is made from wood pulp (pulp) and a mixture of cotton and linen fibers. A specially prepared canvas is soaked in gelatin to give it greater strength, and also insert holograms, polymer or metallized filaments to protect the national currency from counterfeits.

The expression "money does not smell" can easily be refuted by any cashier facing a service with large amounts of cash. Bank employees working in the cash register of the recount, with great enthusiasm, talk about what smells like the bills that come to them.

"The proceeds of various enterprises and organizations are brought to the cash store," says the cashier of the evening cash desk of one of the major commercial banks. "I can tell by the smell, which of our clients today the collection service has visited." Indeed, bills, long time in the premises with a sharp firm odor, will certainly absorb it.

Unfortunately, the daily revenue of the bakery will not make you happy with the smell of fresh baked goods. But the money that has been in the hands of the workers of the enterprise, which is pouring sweet, carbonated drinks, will for some time exude the smell of pear or orange essence.

Kinds of tens of ten species give off with mustiness, and the most favorite smell for all cashiers was the smell of melted plastic, which comes from banknotes sealed in vacuum packaging.

Only taxes do not smell at all ...

Following the emperor Vespasian, tax officials of some leading European powers also decided that money does not smell. The meaning of this expression was fully appreciated by athletes who come to the Austrian ski resorts.

The authorities of this country have introduced the so-called "gypsum tax", the purpose of which is to compensate for the cost of medical care for tourists who were injured and taken to local hospitals. The presence of a medical insurance, in this case, is not taken into account.

In Venice, since 1993, levy a tax on the shadow. They were surrounded by the owners of those buildings, whose visors cast a shadow on the municipal land. When calculating the amount of tax, the number of cloudy days per year is not taken into account.

Since 2008, the Estonian government has imposed an "ecological collection" of cow owners. Local burenki were recognized as the main air pollutants in this country.

Such examples once again confirm that since the time of the Roman Empire the principles of taxation have practically not changed. The state is able to extract income from the most unexpected sources, since non-cash money does not smell by definition.
