The keyboard does not work in BIOS: causes of malfunctions and their elimination

The problem is that the keyboard does not work in BIOS , users usually notice when reinstalling the operating system when it is required to set the priority of the download, or in case of changing additional settings of the primary input / output system. What is the reason for this phenomenon and how to deal with it, will now be considered. Just want to note that not everything is so bad. There are several basic methods to solve the problem within a few minutes. Consider them.

The keyboard does not work in BIOS: causes

Many users pay attention to the fact that in a normally functioning operating system such situations are observed, but very rarely. For the most part this is just the BIOS.

Among the main reasons for the emergence of such a situation, most experts identify the following:

  • Physical damage to plugs and wires;
  • Incorrect connection;
  • The old computer without the support of the connected device;
  • Incorrect setting of BIOS parameters.

Problems related to physical defects or damages will not be considered now. In extreme cases, if the keyboard does not work in the BIOS, it is quite easy to check the operation of an external device of the PS / 2 or USB standard by connecting it to another computer terminal. If everything is in order on it, the cause should be searched in your system unit (more precisely, in the sockets and ports to which the connection is made).

What should I do first?

Regarding troubleshooting, first of all you should check the correctness of the connection.

In the case of USB keyboards, it is not quite right to make a connection through the appropriate port (although sometimes it may be that the keyboard is a USB 3.0 standard, but connected to a USB 2.0 port).

But most often the emergence of such a situation is more typical for keyboards of the old standard PS / 2 standard. Make the connection, taking into account that the colors of the connector of the keyboard and the corresponding socket must match (they have a purple color). However, in this case it is quite difficult to make a mistake.

How to log in to BIOS (keyboard does not work)?

When trying to configure the parameters of the primary system, which very often can be the cause of failure, incidentally, there arises the question of access to them, because in most cases you can not do anything to call BIOS or navigate through the partitions without the keyboard.

But there is a solution. For example, we have a situation where the keyboard on the laptop does not work in BIOS. You can enter the system settings in several ways. Some models of laptops are initially equipped with special buttons on the panel, with the help of which the BIOS parameters section is called. In particular, this applies to products Lenovo, Sony VAIO (button ASSIST), etc.

The second option of access, in case when the keyboard does not work in BIOS, will be the connection of its external analogue via USB-port. But here it is necessary to remember that it is desirable to connect an external keyboard without power, and only then switch the device on to boot.

Reset

Previous solutions can in a sense be called universal, nevertheless, and they can not give the desired result. This can be seen when the USB keyboard does not work in the BIOS. This problem is due only to the fact that the system itself has some kind of failure.

In this case, complete reset of the set parameters should be made. Anyone, even an old stationary computer, can get to the motherboard on which the CMOS battery is installed. You just need to pull it out of the socket for a few minutes, insert it back and try to enter the settings by turning on the terminal for loading.

Setting the correct parameters

But here there are their pitfalls. In the case of USB keyboards, the problem can be to deactivate the support of such devices in the primary system itself.

In this case, you will need to connect the PS / 2 keyboard or, if possible, enter the BIOS on the laptop by pressing a special button, then find parameters like Legacy USB Support or USB Keyboard Support and look at the set value. If the reason is really there, it will be set to Disabled. It needs to be changed to Enabled and save changes on exit (F10, Y). Then a reboot will follow. Perhaps this is the way to solve the problem.

What can be more?

As the testimonies testify, sometimes the failure of the keyboard operation can be connected with the damages of the memory slots, the power supply unit malfunctioning, the short-circuiting of some contacts directly on the motherboard, the malfunction of the ports, etc. Here one can not do without a full diagnosis of the entire system.

Finally, there may also be a problem with the BIOS itself, which is the violation of its work or obsolescence. In this case, you will have to make a full flashing, but this process is unsafe, and without special knowledge an ordinary user can cause irreparable damage to the computer, as a result of which the PC will stop working at all.

Instead of the total

Proceeding from all above-stated, it is possible to draw a conclusion, that, without dependence from the developed situation, not including physical damages or defects, the problem of inability of the keyboard and access to the primary system is solved simply enough.

But there can be a lot of reasons for this phenomenon. And they are not always connected solely with defects of a physical nature. In most cases for the same USB-devices it is enough simply to enable support or make a general reset. This helps in 99 cases out of 100.

Finally, if we are talking about a global problem, when the keyboard does not work at all, you can determine it immediately on the welcome screen when you turn on the computer terminal (it will be reported that the keyboard is missing). In this case, you will either have to check the correctness of the connection, or use the methods suggested above, until the replacement of the failed device with a new one.
