The best thrillers with a twisted plot and an unexpected ending

Films, which can be said that these are the best thrillers with a twisted plot, there is a great variety. But we will not go on about this and will talk in this article only about films that really deserve the attention of spectators.

Let's take a closer look at the best thrillers with a twisted plot. The list of them looks like this:

  • "Silence of the Lambs";
  • "Shutter Island";
  • "Seven";
  • "Sixth Sense";
  • "Devil's Advocate".

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

The FBI has a problem: a new serial killer has appeared. Nobody knows who he is. There are no clues. There is only a corporate style: it rips the skin off its victims. For this author's sign, he was nicknamed Buffalo Bill. The investigation was at an impasse. FBI employees are determined to take a desperate step: they want to ask for help from another serial killer - Hannibal (cannibal) Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). In it are mixed two very rare hypostases of man: he is a psychopath, and a psychiatrist in one person. Dr. Lecter can untangle this matter, but he is unlikely to help the authorities for nothing.

You need a good reason, and it is in the face of a girl (a student of the FBI Academy in Quantico), Clarissa Starling (Jodie Foster). It is not known why, but the head of the investigation Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) decides that K. Starling will be able to talk Dr. Lecter, and he, in turn, will willingly or unwittingly contribute to the investigation and search for "baby Billy".

Before sending Clarice in a cage to Hannibal, J. Crawford warns her: "Do not let Lecter get into your head." As you might guess, this is exactly what happens in the first meeting. This is the plot of the film, which opens the list of "The best thrillers with a twisted plot." According to the review of film critics and viewers, the picture is one of the best in its genre.

Thin psychological games

In this thriller there is almost no shooting, and the main place of action is the head of Clarissa Starling. The girl tries to unravel the mysteries of Hannibal Lecter and simultaneously conquer her own fears and complexes. The film would not have become a masterpiece without a fantastic, mind-blowing game of actors.

Novels by Thomas Harris

In order to understand the depth and originality of the most charming psycho in the history of cinema, you need to turn to the original source, namely, the books of Thomas Harris. It is specifically about Hannibal that such works are narrated:

  • The Red Dragon (1981);
  • "Silence of the Lambs" (1988);
  • Hannibal (1999);
  • "Hannibal: Rise" (2006).

The last novel on the list adds little to the understanding of the personality of the genius psychiatrist, so you can not read it with a clear conscience, but the other three are compulsory for all lovers of the genre.

This is all you need to know about the "Silence of the Lambs" (the film from the series "The Best Thrillers with a Twisted Story"), in order to postpone everything, immediately to run to watch it.

"The Island of the Damned" (2010)

"Reality is not what it seems." That such a banal formulation can be preceded by Scorsese's masterpiece with Leo DiCaprio in the title role. The plot is too complex to transmit, so we will limit ourselves to dotted lines.

In the courtyard is the middle of the 20th century. Two marshals of the United States of America go to a closed clinic to investigate the mysterious disappearance of one of the patients. The psychiatric clinic is on a closed island. You can get there only by ferry, which runs once a day in good weather.

When marshals get there, strange things begin to happen to one of them (Edward Daniels) - he has nightmares. He suddenly recalls the release of the concentration camp, dead children and their mothers in the snow. In addition, some details of the biography of the disappeared patient throw him into a shiver and seem vaguely familiar. Why? This is exactly what Edward Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) has to find out.

Whoever made the hit parade "The best thrillers with a twisted plot" by rating, "The Island of the Damned" will necessarily go there and will occupy high positions.

The Seven (1995)

Two detectives catch a serial killer who sows pain and suffering for a reason, but according to the list of mortal sins, there are only 7 of them:

  • pride;
  • envy;
  • anger;
  • Dejection (laziness, idleness);
  • greed;
  • gluttony;
  • lust.

The assassin, of course, is not in the right order, but in a random order. Distinctive features of crimes are:

  • First, the fact that they are all rationalized to the limit, that is, the ideological and motivational base has been thought out;
  • Secondly, everything is done so that the victims are tormented for their sins as much as possible, and the police would never solve the "deadly" puzzles.

Surprisingly, the maniac is subject not only to his atrocities, but also the entire flow of the film's events and even the final of the picture.

A pair of detectives performed by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman

Almost a classic for American cinema: a young investigator and an old, stupid (in the sense of inexperienced) and intelligent, emotional and rational, married and lonely. And all this with brilliance is played on the screen.

Masterpiece play of actors is a distinctive feature of the films included in the best thrillers with a twisted plot. Our list has already passed its middle. Next comes the penultimate film.

The Sixth Sense (1999)

As in the "Silence of the Lambs", the main character (Malcolm Crowe) in this film is a specialist in human souls. True, unlike Lecter, he is a positive person. M. Crowe (Bruce Willis) treats children selflessly and faithfully. But the trouble is, he alone could not help. And this difficult child (his name Vincent Gray), after growing up, broke in at the height of a private party on the occasion of receiving a letter from the government of Philadelphia and shot a psychologist, but Malcolm by some miracle remained alive. And now he is obsessed with only one idea - to find out exactly where he made a mistake. Especially since the case seemed appropriate: he has a patient (Cole Cyrus) with exactly the same symptoms as that of Vincent Gray. How to know, maybe helping a boy, he will help himself.

"I see dead people"

The phrase, taken in the headline, according to statistics, is one of the three worst phrases in the history of cinema, and the film, which is not horror by genre, nevertheless makes the viewer tremble and wonder where the clue that torment the protagonist lies. What other advertising is needed so people want to watch this wonderful film? Of course, he is in the group of films under the proud title "The best thrillers with a twisted plot with an unexpected end."

"Devil's Advocate" (1997)

Successful lawyer Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves) wins the case of sexual harassment of a school teacher against his student. Events unfold in the court of Florida. But not everything is so simple! Kevin feels the pain of conscience, when during the interrogation of the main witness (directly the victim) understands that his client is really guilty. Lomax asks the judge for a break, goes to the toilet, and along with him the lavatory is visited by his friend, journalist Larry. He tells him literally the following: "It seems that the succession of victories of the brilliant Kevin Lomax came to an end. Do not worry, Kevin, nobody has been able to win forever. "

Lomax got pride and vanity (again, the theme of "mortal sins" suddenly pops up), and he wins the affair. And then everything goes on dashed: the supply of huge money to protect the scoundrels-millionaires. It comes from John Milton (Al Pacino). He just represents "part of the power that eternally wants evil and constantly does good." But outwardly it looks like a good offer from an eminent firm for a lawyer without a conscience. In general, the defender of criminals must be unscrupulous, otherwise he is professionally unsuitable, but Kevin in this respect is an outstanding person, even among his colleagues in the craft.

Nevertheless, Lomax, having got on the hook of Satan, passes all possible tests (wealth, fame, lust, power) in order to understand something.

Charm of Evil

Everyone knows that in Russian literature the main evil-scholar is FM Dostoyevsky. It was in his imperishable creations that he glorified evil for the first time in such a large scale, showed its attractiveness and scale. The films presented here are flesh from the flesh of our classic. These films tell of people immersed in extreme life circumstances, which border either on death or on madness.

God forbid, of course, to anyone of this experience, but nevertheless it is necessary to have some idea about him, even a movie one, so that in case of getting into such a "borderline situation" (K. Jaspers) a person could leave it with honor.
