Sowing tomatoes: some useful tips

All known fruits of tomatoes (or tomatoes) have a very diverse form, size, color and taste. Currently, in the horticulture known to many (up to several thousand) varieties of this plant. Some of them have fruits that do not reach the size of the nut, the fruits of others can be relatively large. There are individual specimens weighing up to 1 kg. Since the seeds of tomatoes are in their fruits, then, naturally, too, can have different dimensions. The smallest seeds are cherry varieties, the fruits of which are also fairly small.

It is difficult in the conditions of such a variety of varieties of tomatoes and agrofirms that offer them, give any specific advice on the acquisition of seeds of a particular variety. Here, first of all, everything depends on the climate, in the conditions of which it is supposed to grow tomatoes, as well as from the purpose of breeding.

If you have at least one small piece of land at your disposal, you will certainly want to plant this plant. As is known, in the conditions of a housekeeping in an open ground usually planted already sprouted seedlings of tomatoes. Of course, the finished seedlings can simply be purchased. But the true gardener will enjoy it by growing it himself.

The most popular way for our gardeners who do not have a specially equipped greenhouse is the cultivation of seedlings on the windowsill. To do this, of course, you will need a window sill, special containers, soil and, of course, the seeds of tomatoes themselves.

Sowing of tomatoes for seedlings is carried out in the spring, usually in February-April. It all depends on the type of tomatoes. So sowing seeds of tomatoes of late-ripening tall varieties is carried out somewhat earlier than others, for this purpose the period from February to March is best suited. And already sowing seeds of tomatoes of low-growing early varieties is made from March to April.

Before sowing tomatoes, they must be sorted and discarded, that is, to remove small and damaged seeds, as well as those that have a color that is not typical for the seeds. Simply put, for sowing you need to select the most viable. If judged by appearance, then they should be large, complete and undamaged.

There is another, more radical way of sorting seeds. You need to put the seeds of tomatoes for a couple of minutes in a weak solution (3-5%) of salt and a little to prevent it. The seeds that will come up with this, need to be removed, since they are "empty", that is, non-viable. Naturally, after such a "bath" seeds must be washed with clean water.

Sowing tomatoes will give more tangible results if their seeds are treated with special nutrients, as well as disinfectants. This will certainly increase their germination and resistance to disease. To do this, you can use a solution of potassium permanganate in a concentration of 1 to 100 or a solution of phytosporin, which is easy to obtain in specialized stores. Such seeds are ready for sowing. However, if you also treat them, for example, with heteroauxin, this will further increase the immunity of seeds and increase their vitality.

This procedure, like germination of seeds, is not necessary for tomatoes. If the sowing of tomatoes is done correctly and at the right time, the seedlings will quickly and harmoniously arise. It should be noted that recently the market and agro firms offer seeds of tomatoes wrapped in a special colored shell. This shell contains both a seed dresser and a regulator of their growth. Therefore, such seeds do not require pretreatment.

Naturally, before sowing tomatoes, you need to prepare in advance for this purpose special containers or containers, as well as a soil mixture that you can make yourself or buy specialized stores.
