The enemy had ships, and in our fleet there were only sailing ships. Then Prince Alexander Sergeevich Menshikov takes a difficult decision: to block the entrance to the bay by flooding several warships and keep the city's defense to the last. At first, his decision was received with outrage, but later the military council recognized him as the only true one.

At the entrance to the bay, five ships of the line and a couple of frigates were sunk. The defense of the city began, which lasted almost a year. Gradually the storms were damaged, and in due course I had to sink several more ships. Their crews then defended the city on bastions. A total of 75 battle ships and 16 auxiliary vessels were flooded in this place.
