"Poor people" - a summary of the school curriculum

In the school program, there is always a classic, including "Poor People". The summary is intended for those who for some reason did not have time to read the work in time before the examination. In the end, there may be something that has not come yet that moment in life when you want to read Dostoevsky consciously, because below is proposed "Poor People" - a short content of the work.

The protagonist is titular adviser Makar Devushkin, 49 years old. Despite the title, he rewrites for a penny of paper for one of the departments of St. Petersburg. The hero treats life with optimism: huddling behind the partition in the kitchen of the common apartment, he describes the dwelling as a "new apartment". He has to save on everything to pay for the living of his distant relative Varvara Dobroselova, whom Devushkin voluntarily takes care of. He rarely sees her, although he took her to be raised at the age of seventeen.

The short story "Poor people" is reduced to the presentation of letters - the only almost way to communicate between Makar and Varenka. On paper, they pour out each other's soul and hope for a brighter future. In order to buy Vare sweets, Devushkin denies himself lighting and food, explaining this by the only "paternal affection". However, to go to Vary is embarrassed.

Makar describes the poverty in which he lives and who is ashamed. Anxious for him at Varenka finds a relative from whom she lives - Anna Feodorovna, "benefactress" who offered the orphan landowner Bykov. Now Devushkin should save, take out Varenka, who for almost a month lay unconscious after the violence.

In one of the letters the girl expounds the history of her youth. The former teacher of Varenka, who was described in the story "Poor People", Dostoevsky-Peter, who was once a student, seemed to Vary the kindest person, but his attitude towards his visiting father was surprising. The case consisted of the drunkenness of an old man, an equally petty official for whom the tyrant Bykov had betrayed the beautiful mother of Peter. At the insistence of the same Bykov, the young man was learned and sent to Anna Feodorovna for bread. Here he met with Varenka, took up her taste and upbringing.

Alas, misfortune befell the old father: Peter fell ill and died of consumption. His books were given to a drunkard who stuffed their pockets with them and ran behind a wagon with the body of the deceased, sobbing and dropping the folios in the mud. Vary is doubly difficult - soon after Peter dies her mother.

By the end of June, Makar had run out of all savings, and he had to move out. There is an unpleasant incident with the search officer, pushing Makar from the stairs. Neighbors chuckle at the role of Varenka in his life.

All attempts to take interest are failures. Devushkin in response tells about his fate, but in the story "Poor people", the summary only conveys the main points: he is in the service for thirty years, he sits quietly and does not stick out, his only joy is Varenka. He meets her during a walk and admires every thought expressed, suggested for discussion by the book, including Pushkin's "Stationmaster." But Gogol's "Overcoat" offends the official's feelings, as if his "underwear was turned inside out."

The girl's health is getting worse, and she is not able to work anymore. Devushkin is in despair, and the only incident that somehow corrected his situation is a challenge to his boss. He was indignant about the appearance of the employee and condescendingly gave a hundred rubles. The amount was enough to pay for housing, medicine and sweets for Varenka.

At the same time, Bykov comes to the girl, who wants to have legal heirs, to deprive the money of his nephew. Varya agrees - this is her only way out to save her name. Makar is beside himself with grief, but helps the ward to collect dowry. On the day of the wedding, he confesses to Varenka that he wrote and worked for her alone, so "by what right do human life destroy"?

This is the summary. "Poor people" - a work that is the standard of creativity of the great Dostoevsky.
