In the 1830s-1840s a whole series of works on the life of Petersburg was written. Wrote them Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol. The cycle "Petersburg Stories" consists of small but interesting stories. They are called "The Nose", "Nevsky Prospekt", "Overcoat", Notes of the Madman "and" Portrait. "The main motive in these works is the description of the image of the" little man "practically crushed by the surrounding reality.

The first product of the remarkable cycle

How does the narrative of the popular cycle of Nikolai Vasilyevich begin? Or where to start the summary? Gogol, "Petersburg Story" which consists of several works, put in the first place in this series the story "Nevsky Prospect." It describes the adventures of two young people who, fanning along Nevsky Prospekt, decided to priadarit for young beauties.

One of them was called Piskarev. He was an artist and a romantic. Therefore, seeing a certain brunette, who immediately liked him, he decided to follow her to the doors of her house. But when I took the lady to the place of residence, I realized that this was an ordinary brothel. The artist leaves in confusion and disappointment.

The decision of the artist or the mockery of the beloved?

What does the work of Nikolai Vasilyevich, his brief content, further tell? Gogol, whose "Petersburg Stories" became quite famous, claims that the events described in the story "Nevsky Prospekt" occurred in reality. The time has passed, but the artist realized that he can not forget the beautiful stranger. He decides to get her out of the depths of debauchery and marry her. To do this, he again returns to the house where the courtesan lives, and tells her about his intentions.

But, unfortunately, the seventeen-year-old beauty did not appreciate Piskarev's high impulses. Moreover, she laughed at the way he painted their joint life. The artist is insanely upset, he returns to his home and is locked there alone. A whole week passed before his lifeless body was found in the apartment. Unable to withstand disappointments, he cut his throat. His funeral took place at the Okhta cemetery. And no one noticed his friend, Lieutenant Pirogov, with whom he was walking along the avenue.

The Adventures of Pirogov, or Another Unhappy Love

What further will the reader tell the famous St. Petersburg novel? Gogol very colorfully described the adventure of the lieutenant, who left Nevsky Square, following the beautiful blonde. He brought the beauty to the house of Schiller, who was the husband of this stranger. Having run into the brutal behavior of the spouse on the first evening, the lieutenant does not lose hope and returns there the next day. He wants to priudarit for the beauty, Schiller's wife.

Some time passed, and one day the husband returned home and found his wife dancing and kissing Pirogov. Then he was drunk and wicked, using the help of his no less drunken comrades, flogged the lieutenant. Pirogov, jumping out of the home of Schiller, was full of intentions to take revenge, but, having calmed down a little, changed his mind. This concludes the story itself and its brief content.

Gogol, whose Petersburg Stories consist of several works, presents the following story to the reader's judgment, he is called "The Nose."

Story about the missing part of the body

Somehow waking up in the morning, Major Kovalev, coming to the mirror, found that his nose was gone. He begins a thorough search for his vanished part of the body. Even meets him on the street, dressed like a real state councilor. The nose did not want to talk to his master, and he had to go to the police station.

After a while, the loss was returned, but the nose did not want to grow into place. Even the doctor did not help. Tired and desperate, Major Kovalev went to bed, and the next morning found a loss in the proper place. So the next Petersburg story ends.

Gogol, continuing the theme of the "little man," then writes a short story called "Overcoat."

Akaky Akakievich, or Another "little character"

Bashmachkin was an unremarkable person. His job was to rewrite a variety of papers. He received great pleasure from this, often even took them to his house, where, after a quick bite, he diligently continued to work. Surrounding him at work colleagues constantly scoffed at him. Who pushes, and who just laugh. Akaki tolerated all the ridicule without a murmur.

One day he realized that his overcoat had long since worn down, and turned to the tailor, who said that there was no reason to repair it. You need to sew a new overcoat. And for this it was necessary to pay eighty rubles. Bashmachkin began to save absolutely everything and literally raved about the new purchase. And finally got it. A new overcoat causes admiration of others. All praise the purchase. And Akaky Akakievich is infinitely happy.

But one day, when he meets hoodlums on the street, Bashmachkin loses his overcoat. He was robbed. The unfortunate Akaky begins searching for his new clothes, appealing to various instances. But nowhere to find the truth, he dies from the fever that has gripped him. In the city after this event rumors spread that some dead man wanders through the streets and rips off all the overcoats. And someone even recognized him as Bashmachkin.
