Opel Astra hatchback is the successor of the Opel Cadet family , whose production history dates back to 1962. Numerous representatives of the Cadet model line transferred their technical traditions to the new car, and in 1991 Opel Astra took the title of successor. By that time the Opel Astra F model was completely ready, which was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It was already then modified and presented in five variants, among which there were two hatchbacks, a sedan and a station wagon. The station wagon named "Caravan", in its turn, had a modified younger brother "Astraven", which appeared to be a working truck in a three-door version.
The main attention at the motor show was given to the Opel Astra hatchback as the most promising car. The car passed a deep restyling in 1994, a new radiator grille and other door handles, new stylish side mirrors and rims. The interior became more comfortable and, as an important addition, a pillow of safety was mounted in the steering column . The seats were modernized for the sake of greater ergonomics, the backs changed the longitudinal contour with the expectation of a more comfortable fit. The head restraints were adjusted in height and in transverse axial displacement.
At the next showroom in Frankfurt, held in 1997, again was introduced to the Opel Astra hatchback 3-door. The car appeared in a radically updated form. The new features reflected improved aerodynamics and a significantly increased level of body strength. The safety of the machine was also backed up by emergency cushions in the number of four, two small front and two surround side ones, embedded in the backs of the front seats. Improved door locks closed the doors completely noiselessly, and the electric drive of the power windows of the front doors was made in a two-speed version.
