Robotic gearbox - it's kind of a "semi-automatic". It combines the features of an automatic and mechanical box. With "mechanics" it combines the ongoing switching at the request of the driver. Unlike a car with a mechanical box and with it a clutch pedal, which must be pressed when switching speeds, for cars with a semi-automatic option, the clutch pedal is missing. Instead, equipping the car involves the presence of an entire sensor system, actuators and transmitters, which switch independently the gearbox onboard computer. Thanks to the computer, the operation of all elements is synchronized, and some electronic systems that are equipped with a robotic gearbox are also able to learn to recognize the driving style of each driver, that is, they can anticipate its actions.

Cars for mass production are supplied with the handle of switching of speeds which is located in the same place where and the handle of a mechanical box. The difference is the scheme of moving the lever - the traditional L-shaped is replaced by a move only forward and backward. In cars participating in Formula 1, there are no handles, they are replaced by two pedals, which switch the speed: one - increases, the other - reduces.

The robotized gearbox works as follows. By switching the gear knob and pressing the accelerator pedal, the information about the speed available at that moment and the new speed change request get to the pressure block through the sensors. The received information is synchronized in the pressure block, the optimum speed is selected, and the coordinated operation of all gearbox mechanisms is ensured. Here are taken into account the indicators of control devices, the speed of the engine's rotation of the air conditioner.

The control of the hydromechanical unit responsible for closing and opening the clutch is via the central pressure block. This is a synchronous process with all the actions of the driver. Robotic gearbox is very convenient: electronics respond many times faster than a person. For the neutral position of the transmission, when parking, reverse, pre-press the two pedals at the same time, then select the desired position.

Clutch is used only to drive the car. The gearbox of the robot for fast switching of speeds does not demand moving of the handle, it is necessary to release a gas pedal, the engine will reduce turns to necessary speed to be switched to the following high-speed mode. Ensure that the handle is in the required position.

The robot's gearbox is installed not only on cars, but also on trucks and even buses. Japanese manufacturers have installed such an element on one of the sports motorcycles Yamaha. At each manufacturer of cars such variant can be called in own way. Do not forget that he requires a careful and delicate attitude to himself.

Robotic mechanical gearbox provides much more convenience and comfort to the driver, he has more opportunities to concentrate his attention directly on the road. It has some difference from the so-called "automatic" gearboxes. It is based on the same "mechanics", but equipped with additional servo drives. Their task is to automatically squeeze the clutch and switch gear stages. For example, in the Opel car, the robotic manual gearbox has a Start-N function with automatic switching to neutral position. When the brake pedal is depressed, the car starts.

This box is much cheaper than fully automated, although it combines the advantages of the "automatic" and the dynamic characteristics of the mechanical variant, and also provides less fuel consumption.
