Mythological consciousness: basic features

Mythological consciousness is a kind of worldview, which is based, mainly, on the desire to believe. This is one of the most ancient types of perception of the world, and it is noteworthy that the reality is still perceived mythologically by many people. Usually, the more developed science is, the more skeptical is the attitude of society to myths, but now the popularization of scientific knowledge leads to distortion of reliable information, and so-called "scientific myths" arise.

Mythological consciousness: definition

To define and understand the essence of consciousness with the mythological type, it is necessary to correctly represent the very phenomenon of myth. In the simplest sense, a myth is a story that explains the process or the phenomenon of the surrounding world. So, we know many stories about love and death, natural phenomena, human behavior (devotion and betrayal, for example). Ancient myths have features of artistry and are sometimes transmitted in a poetic form. Despite this, they contain elements of scientific knowledge, philosophy and religion. This explanation of the myth makes it a little different from the fairy tale, but between them there is a big difference in the perception of the listener: the person perceives the myth as a truth that is based on faith and empathy to the heroes. Thus, the mythological worldview is a set of ideas based on the emotional perception of reality and belief in facts that are stated but not confirmed and based on conjectures.

Mythological consciousness as the integrity of perception

Here we see that people who have a mythological worldview can explain all the surrounding phenomena. In this case there are no "information gaps", because Everything is explained with the help of stories that are believed. For example, an unusual coincidence of circumstances is explained not by complex concepts with the interweaving of theories about space and time, probability, but by an elementary appeal to "spirits" or "karma." Incorrigible phenomena require immediate explanation on their part, and since science can not explain everything, they try to fill this shortage with the help of myths. It is certainly unfair to say that these conjectures are not relevant to reality: they can be both true and false, so the use of such concepts as "karma" or "spirits" is entirely permissible and does not at all mean the presence of mental deviations in man.

Mythological consciousness as a unity of reality and supernatural

People with this type of worldview do not separate the supernatural from the norm, because in their understanding the world is one. Even God or gods exist in accordance with the laws of the universe and do not contradict them. Gods or spirits appear here as elements of our world, which come into relationship with the elements of the lower links - animals or man.

Mythological consciousness as a symbolic perception of reality

Here in thinking symbolic perception prevails. If the scientific world operates with concepts, then in mythological images, symbols and signs predominate. A person in this case is looking for a special meaning in the events that surround him, and he considers them to be a certain "sign".

Mythological consciousness and belief in magical phenomena

This is probably the most vivid expression of the mythological worldview. Here, a person believes in the magical powers of nature, it is permissible for him to use rituals and rituals to persuade the higher forces to his side, who, according to his belief, can facilitate the state of his affairs and support in a difficult situation. The most common is the kind of sympathetic magic that manifests itself in the identification of a symbol and an object. Man believes that by influencing a thing that indirectly or directly symbolizes, for example, another person, it will affect his condition. Usually such rituals are accompanied by words, the meaning of which depends on the purpose of the impact.
