Kurumoch - airport in Samara

Kurumoch International Airport is located in the village of Bereza, between two large cities: Samara and Togliatti. In 2015, served more than 2.2 million passengers. At the end of the year, it is one of the ten largest airports in Russia.

History of origin and development

Officially it is considered to be the date of the opening of the airport on December 19, 1957. On this day, an order was signed to create the airport of the fourth class Kurumoch.

The airport was built before 1960. This year, training flights were allowed on planes like An-10 and Il-18. Since February of the following year the flight Kuibyshev-Moscow began to depart. It was an An-10 plane carrying cargo.

On the same plane, but a few months later, the first flights for people began. In mid-May, a passenger flight to Mineralnye Vody was sent. Immediately after this, flights to Leningrad, Sverdlovsk, Tashkent, Tbilisi, Adler began.

By the beginning of the seventies, 700 thousand people had used the airport's services. Cargoes amounted to 27 thousand tons.

In the late eighties the airport underwent a reconstruction. New facilities were built to improve the infrastructure. By that time, the construction of a second runway had been completed, which allowed the use of larger aircraft.

Kurumoch International Airport got its status in 1992. A year later the international terminal started its work.

In 1994-1995 the airport was renamed several times. Its traditional name - Kurumoch - the airport returned in 2002.

In 2007, a large sum was allocated from the country's budget for reconstruction, which was planned to be completed by 2014.

By 2011, 96% of the airport's shares were transferred to the Samara Region Development Corporation. And in January of the next year, reconstruction and construction of a new complex of buildings began. The use of the new terminal began in January 2015.

General characteristics

The airport is located at a distance of 35 kilometers from Samara and at a distance of 45 kilometers from Togliatti.

Kurumoch Airport can serve airplanes of various types, including An-124, Tu-204, Airbus-A330, IL-96 and other lighter versions.

For the landing (take-off) of aircraft, there are two lanes equipped with the necessary systems. There are two terminals for passenger service. One of them started working only in January 2015. Its area is 42.6 thousand square meters. In one hour it is able to miss 1,4 thousand passengers. This terminal includes the following objects:

  • 6 exits to the bus station.
  • 7 gangways to the platform.
  • A baggage sorting system that works in automatic mode.
  • 4 conveyors for luggage.

How to get to the airport and back

There are several ways to get to the airport. The most simple is to take a taxi.

The second option is route transport. He leaves the site next to the terminal. Tickets are sold at the box office in the arrivals hall. Regularly there is a bus No. 652 on two routes: Kurumoch (airport) -Samara, Kurumoch-Togliatti.

Buses No. 392 and No. 79 go to the villages near the airport. You can also use them for travel.

Incidents

During the existence of the airport there were four serious disasters.

In the disaster that occurred on March 8, 1965, 30 people were killed. Of these, 9 crew members and 21 passengers. The plane was run by an intern, and next to him was the inspector. When climbing because of a failure in the horizon during the snowfall, the pilots lost their orientation. The plane fell to the ground.

The second catastrophe occurred on July 9, 1973. As a result of the destruction of the engine, the fuselage was damaged. Two passengers were killed by splinters. Two more were wounded.

Serious accident caused by the pilot occurred on October 20, 1986. During landing the chassis broke down. The plane lay on its belly and in this position moved about three hundred meters. The fuselage broke down halfway. The fuel leak caused a fire. On board there were 93 people. Of these, 69 died.

The last catastrophe, also associated with crew errors, occurred on March 17, 2007. Not reaching the runway, the plane landed on the ground, continuing to move by inertia. Then he rolled over and broke into pieces. Six people died, 27 were wounded.
