International Day of Tolerance: we are all different, but we still have to respect each other

There are many nationalities and nationalities on the planet Earth. Each ethnic group has its own customs, traditions, religious beliefs, ideas about when and how to work, rest, build a family life and raise children. Unfortunately, not everyone understands how important it is to tolerate others. And among the representatives of one people, there are often disagreements, misunderstandings, and sometimes serious conflicts.

The problem of tolerance is of concern to the representatives of the UN, therefore, in 1995, at the suggestion of UNESCO, the International Day of Tolerance was established.

What is tolerance?

Tolerance is understood as acceptance of the fact that the world around us is diverse, and all members of society show their individuality differently. A tolerant person does not have to be indulgent, but he must cultivate a tolerant attitude towards others, respect human rights and freedoms.

Tolerance (in a different way - tolerance) is manifested at the state level, during the everyday life of people and is formed as a result of education and upbringing. Legislative bodies are recommended to draft bills based on the principles of fairness and impartiality, to observe the rule of law, judicial and administrative norms.

At the family and community level, tolerance is manifested in respect for each other. If necessary, a person or a group of people is offered social and legal protection.

If the social group does not tolerate representatives of another nationality, race, religion, propagates hatred and enmity, then the attitude to such a community can not be tolerant.

Tolerance must be educated from childhood, so the UN supports the development and implementation of educational programs to promote tolerance in the younger generation. It is recommended to begin education with the explanation of the child's own rights and freedoms, then the student is led to the understanding that all people are equal. Along with the education of tolerance, the prevention of violence on national, racial and religious grounds is carried out.

Festive events

The International Day of Tolerance is celebrated every year on 16 November. At the headquarters of the United Nations Organization, they hold a themed festival "We are one family: we train our children for a safer world."

At the state level, the holiday is celebrated in schools, kindergartens, and out-of-school establishments. Competitions, seminars, interactive games, sports competitions are held. In contrast to events held on other days, on November 16, teachers emphasize children's need to be friends, respect and understand each other. If a representative of a different nationality is studying in a class or group, one should not offend him, emphasize differences in his behavior, speech, manners, and judgments. The same applies to children with developmental peculiarities with inclusive education.

The most significant International Day of Tolerance was celebrated in 2006 in the Leningrad Region. Schoolchildren got acquainted with the games of the peoples of Russia, attended a cinema show devoted to the problems of representatives of different cultures, interpreted the notion of "tolerance". Teachers and school administrators listened to the lectures and took part in seminars of the relevant subjects.

In Transbaikalia and Petrozavodsk a year ago, within the framework of the action "We are for the friendship of nations", hours of running and dancing took place. Young people drew posters, took interviews from each other, made flyers. Young Petersburgers talked with the representative of the Federation for Universal Peace T. Krasnosumova, and the Muscovites communicated with the ambassadors of the world. In Volgograd, we learned the movements of folk dances and played football, while Kazan schoolchildren visited the Ecumenical Temple. Russian 16 cities took part in the action.

The International Day of Tolerance is celebrated by all UN member states.

Tolerance in Russia

In the Russian Federation, the policy of tolerance is legislatively enshrined in the Constitution. Article 13 notes that the state recognizes ideological diversity and no ideology can prevail. The Criminal Code also provides for relevant articles.

Through ratification, international legal acts have become legally valid, in accordance with which other international holidays of Russia are celebrated (International Women's Day, Labor Protection Day) :

  • Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • Convention on the Rights of the Child.
  • Pacts on civil and political, economic and cultural rights.

Rules for the behavior of a tolerant personality

The International Day of Tolerance is a good occasion to recall what positions should be taken when communicating with other people. A person who respects the principles of tolerance:

  • Recognizes that all people have their own dignity without exception.
  • Respects the differences between people.
  • I know the notion of "individuality".
  • It realizes that joint action is based on complementarity.
  • Strives to maintain peace on earth.
  • It preserves the historical memory of its people.
  • Is able to force himself, without forcing others.
  • Observes the legislative and moral standards.

Awards for Tolerance

International organizations encourage activities to spread the ideas of tolerance. So, the throne of Spain Juan Carlos I in 2010 received the European Medal of Tolerance. Two years later, Ivo Josipovic, President of Croatia, and Boris Tadic, former President of Serbia, were awarded. The UNESCO Prize of one hundred thousand dollars was awarded to the citizens of Mali and Chile. In their countries, men have been active in protecting human rights.
