Incomparable clematis: shelter for the winter

A wonderful climbing plant can bloom for a very long time, many varieties do not fade until the first frost. It is because of this property that most lianas can die in late autumn, including clematis. Shelter for the winter, which would provide reliable protection, is the main goal of caring and far-seeing florists. What professionals advise about this, read in our article.

Suitable time for protection

The weakest point of this flower is the radical neck, its freezing leads to rapid death of the whole plant. Therefore, shelter clematis for winter should be carried out in the fall. The optimal period is the end of October, and in case of warm weather - the beginning of November. Before the procedure of shelter, it is necessary to carry out some work with the flower and soil.

  1. Clematis need to be carefully poured.
  2. The soil around the plant is treated with copper-containing horticultural means - they protect the flower from most fungal diseases. To do this, use iron or copper sulfate, according to the instructions given or in a safe 1% concentration. If you are afraid to contact toxic preparations, but you do not have the necessary experience, you should use a simple solution of potassium permanganate. It should have a gentle pink color.

Creating a shelter for a flower

After such procedures, it's time to "hide" clematis. Shelter for the winter is based on proper tillage. First, the ground is gently dug, this will help the recent hydration of the plant. Then the flower is fertilized with the existing soil, while the radical neck needs to be treated with crushed activated carbon, wood ash or fine sand. The height of the protective knoll is 10-15 cm - this should be enough to protect clematis. Shelter for the winter also involves pruning young shoots, which managed to form on the vines of the current season. This procedure should be carried out with such varieties as Crimson Star, Gypsy Quinn, Siza Bird, Victoria, Hope, Mephistopheles and Luther Burbank.

If the plant was planted according to all the required rules, then its kidneys will necessarily be deep in the ground. It is for this reason that the clematis shelter is made so that frosts do not damage young shoots and future sprouts. It is necessary to consider the following rule: in the spring, the lianas will need to be carefully released from the snow and unearthed by the shelter. Otherwise, clematis will germinate earlier than necessary, and die in the last frosts of the cold season.

Protection of other varieties of creeper

There are also varieties that are not cut off before the construction of the shelter - they develop young buds on last year's shoots. To such varieties of this plant include: clematis flowery, sprawling and woolly. Naturally, these varieties require more reliable shelter than cropped species. To protect such clematis, shelter for the winter also begin with hilling, as described earlier. Then they create a support about 12-15 cm high, on which all the shoots are gently laid.

Next, you need to carefully fix the plant on such a frame with the help of arcs from the wire and cover everything with pine lapnikom or oat straw. On top of the clematis covered with a thick film or a common roofing material, you need to make sure that the wind can not rip off the protective "roof" of the structure. Often for this, it is fixed with stones. Remove all protection is necessary in late March, usually in the evening or on a cloudy day.
