IKEA created an "indoor garden" for urban residents

Among many giant companies, IKEA is one of the most environmentally friendly and conscious. She received an award for refugee shelters, and plans to replace the packaging from polystyrene with biodegradable ones. Indeed, there is much to learn.

Multilevel garden

Continuing its progressive program Space10, the IKEA laboratory is now studying sustainable solutions for future urban life. The company joined forces with the Danish architects Mads-Ulrik Husum and Sin Lindholm, who developed Growroom, a spherical, multi-level indoor garden designed to grow enough food to feed several families.

The Growroom is designed to support everyday prosperity in cities, as it allows you to create a small oasis in the concrete jungle and helps people connect with nature, as we can smell and taste the abundance of herbs and plants.

The company hopes that residents of the city will be able to work together, growing food to feed themselves in places where the external environment is not viable. It can be created in just 17 steps with the help of plywood, nails and wood-cutting tools.

Alternative

Local food is a serious alternative to the global food model. This reduces the pressure on the environment, and helps to educate children with an understanding of where the food actually comes from. Growing local food is a good idea, if only because traditional agriculture takes up a lot of space, and space is a scarce resource in urban conditions.

After assembly, the multi-level indoor garden will measure 2.8 x 2.5 meters. Blocking plywood parts will allow water and light to reach the vegetation on each level, but inside the garden will remain hollow, providing shelter for visitors. Growroom has a Creative Commons license that allows people to expand their garden and make it unique.

Interest in the novelty

Growroom has generated interest in many cities, from Helsinki to Rio de Janeiro and from Taiwan to San Francisco. Nevertheless, the company says that it makes no sense to promote local food production, and then start sending it through the oceans and continents. Therefore, their idea is that any person can download a free plan for creating this garden, regardless of the country of residence.

A garden that provides people with green spaces, unusual architecture, and offers the possibility of growing food ... And you want this yourself?
