Each mother, who applied her new baby to the breast for the first time, experiences a storm of emotions. After all, this little man who has just come into this world is its continuation. Now almost every woman knows about the undeniable benefits of breastfeeding and wants to feed her baby as long as possible.

Why does it often happen that a young mother begins to experience unpleasant emotions instead of joy from feeding? Unfortunately, a woman sometimes feels just unbearable pain in her chest. It is very difficult for a nursing mother to cope with the problem herself, but she does not know to whom she can turn for help. Quite often it leads to the fact that a woman decides to completely abandon breastfeeding.

At parents' forums, where young mothers communicate on different topics, such a complaint is not uncommon. Many women, faced with this problem, write: "I breastfeed - it hurts my chest, advise something." Sometimes a woman does not even guess that her problem can be addressed to a specialist breastfeeding consultant. A GW consultant will not only explain why the chest hurts, the nursing mother also learns how to cope with this problem and how to avoid such troubles in the future. First of all, every woman should remember the main thing: breastfeeding is a natural process, which in no way should cause pain and negative emotions.

So, let's look at the causes of the problems of many mothers for whom the phrases "breastfeed" - "sore chest" have become synonymous. In fact, the reasons can be different, let's look at the main ones.

I breastfeed - my chest hurts: the causes of the problem and the methods of struggle

  1. The first painful sensations a woman can experience immediately after birth. Unfortunately, not in all maternity homes can mom help, showing in practice how to put the baby to the breast. But it is from the correct capture depends on whether the nipple will be injured during feeding. The child must capture not only the nipple, but also the areola around it. If from the first time the baby did not manage to grab the breast correctly, then do not let him suck in this way. Gently, but persistently take it from the child - to do this, insert your little finger into the corner of the baby's mouth and press out the gums. Then again try to put the baby to the breast, if it does not work out, then help him by squeezing the areola around the nipple with his fingers and pointing it to the mouth of the baby.
  2. Many women experience painful sensations on day 2-3 after delivery, when milk begins to come. The mammary gland can become hard and hot, and some can even rise in temperature. This is due to the filling of milk lobes and ducts in the chest. If your child does not cope with such a volume of milk, then it is necessary to express the breast to a soft state, carefully checking that no seals or lumps remain. You can do this with a breast pump or manually, and you can ask for help from the maternity hospital who know how to express the milk correctly. In no case do not leave such a problem without attention, otherwise you risk to earn lactostasis or mastitis.
  3. If, after all, lactostasis (blockage of the milk ducts) has not been avoided, then it is necessary to act as follows. Attach the child as often as possible to the sick breast, during feeding, choose a position in which the chin of the child will be directed towards stagnation. If the child does not cope, then express the breast before feeding, and then empty let the hungry kid. In addition, before the beginning of feeding to the place of stagnation, you can apply a warm compress and lightly massage the diseased gland.
  4. If the nipples have cracks, then for their treatment, use special ointments, which are sold in pharmacies. Remember that cracks on the nipples - this is the gateway to infection, and if the crack is not treated, then the nursing mother risks getting mastitis - inflammation of the mammary glands. At the first signs of mastitis (pain, high fever), you should consult a doctor - gynecologist or surgeon.

If you do everything correctly, the phrases "breastfeed" - "sore chest" will not have anything to do with you, and breastfeeding will give you and your baby a real treat.
