How to sew tulle with lambrequins by hand

It has long been noted that any room, even with a very modest finish of walls, floor, ceiling and cheap furnishings, can be made cozy and admirable, by hanging tulle with lambrequins. Any woman who has sewing skills and successful patterns can make her own design.

A little bit about tulle

Under this name is known a transparent mesh cotton, semi-silk or other fabric.

Tulle are:

  • Monophonic and color;
  • Smooth and patterned;
  • Made of natural or artificial fibers.

Smooth tulle is produced on special machines from two systems of threads. It is used for making elegant women's underwear and sewing evening wear, as well as as a basis for piece embroidered items.

Tulle patterned (curtain) is produced on lace machines. It is widely used for sewing items of home textiles, such as curtains, cloaks and bedspreads.

Tulle for window decoration

It is known that curtains to protect the premises from sunlight, mosquitoes, midges and other winged insects have been used since the time of the Egyptian pharaohs. Later they learned to beautifully drape, and in the Renaissance they began to use velvet and tulle with lambrequins. They were perfectly combined with magnificent brushes, picks and beautiful cornices, creating a luxurious design for window and doorways.

What is lambrequins

This detail of the interior jersey is a horizontal decorative drapery, located in the upper part of the complex curtain, window opening or door. It occupies the entire width of the eaves and, as a rule, is made of dense fabric with pleating, planted on a lining-bando, or without it (the "soft" version). Combined versions made of several types of fabric are often used.

Lambruck can be decorated with additional decorative elements in the form of flounces, brushes and cutouts in the form of teeth or semicircles. It can be symmetrical or have an abstract design with any outline.

Tulle with lambrequins in the hall: can I sew with my own hands

Since the living room is the main room in the house, it is especially responsible for its decoration. This fully applies to the decoration of window openings.

If this is the first experience of sewing stylish curtains with a lambrequin, it is not recommended to overestimate your strengths and choose options with complex drapery.

General Instruction

Tulle with lambrequins (photo for the hall see below) can be any color. It is chosen depending on the scale used to design this room as a whole.

The work is organized in the following sequence:

  • Fasten the bar above the window opening, which will serve as the basis for the curtains. The place of installation of this part is placed above the frame by 10 cm, and the length is made such that it exceeds the width of the window opening by a maximum of 15 centimeters.
  • If you are going to sew a version on lining fabric, then it is cut using a pattern. Then, on the sewing machine, the base material is sewn to it. The lining is stretched so that the top edge of the decorative curtains is not touched, as it will have to turn out the sewn material.
  • The finished elements of the window opening are attached to the already installed base in the center. To do this, a good assistant is a furniture stapler. Free ends of lambrequin spread along the entire length of the eaves and fixed in the right places.
  • If everything is done carefully, then tulle with lambrequins (photo for the hall is presented below) will be a wonderful decoration of your apartment.

How to calculate the consumption of cloth on the curtain

If you need tulle with lambrequins in the kitchen, a photo of which you saw in a magazine where it is not specified how many meters of textiles are needed, you can use our instructions.

First, we will explain the consumption of tulle and a denser decorating fabric if it is assumed that the complex curtain will consist of three vertical parts and a lambrequin.

In order to make a calculation, you should determine the type of braid and the width of the cornice. Their ratio can be 2: 1, 1.5: 1 or 3: 1. Suppose that tulle with lambrequins is used for the kitchen, where the cornice has a width of 130 cm. Then it is better to choose a ratio of 2: 1. In other words, you need to buy a tulle with a width of 260 + 10 cm. The "additive" is needed here to align the edges, and to the hem of the sides.

As for the consumption of denser tissue hanging on the sides, there are probably two options:

  • In unconnected form, it can cover the entire tulle. Then the flow should be the same as for a transparent fabric + 10 cm.
  • Thick fabric can hang over the tulle, leaving it open in the middle. Its tissue consumption will be less by 1/3.
  • As to how much textiles will go to make lambrequin, it depends on the pattern.

Height of the integrated curtains

The width of tulle and curtain fabrics is standard (2.8-3 m). Thus, the height of the curtain does not affect the consumption of tissue, but consider it. Most often, those who choose tulle with lambrequins for the decoration of the apartment prefer that after suspension on the cornice, they reach the floor. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the width of the braid, which can be equal to 2.5-10 cm, since any of its loop rows can be used to fasten to the cornice. In addition, you need to take into account that to fold the curtains from below you need to leave about 5 cm.

How to adjust the machine to sew curtains

Tulle with lambrequins will look presentable only if the work is done accurately and qualitatively. To do this, first of all, you need to adjust the sewing machine by setting the appropriate tension of the lower and upper threads. You can pick it up by trial and error using a folded tulle flap.

In addition, the quality of the stitch is strongly influenced by the yarn, which must be thin, strong and elastic. As for color, it is better to choose it in the tone of the fabric or one shade darker.

Be sure to change the needle of the sewing machine to a new, thin one, since its dulled end will pull out the threads or leave traces of punctures.

The line will not pull the tulle, if the stitch will have a length of not less than 3-5 mm. It is also recommended to set the height of the teeth so that they advance the fabric without collecting it from the needle.

To prevent this, some craftsmen pull the edge of the curtain when sewing on a typewriter. This is fraught with the fact that the needle can break, tearing or scratching the fabric, or the edge of the tulle will stretch, and on the sides will appear ugly "waves" that will be difficult to clean.

Now you know how to sew a tulle with a lambrequin into a bedroom, a photo of which you can proudly demonstrate to your friends.
