How to Choose Tires for a Car

In the modern world, engine power and high-speed capabilities of automobiles are growing every year, while the requirements for comfort and safety of driving are being updated. World leaders in the production of tires are improving their products, becoming in their characteristics maximum comfort, all-weather handling and durability.

Which tires to choose for a car are prescribed in the manufacturer's recommendations. If these recommendations are not complied with, the controllability of the car may deteriorate, the speedometer may be distorted and even the tires themselves may collapse.

If the height or width of the tire is longer than the recommended one, the wheel can touch (especially when turning) the fixed parts of the body and the suspension brackets. If the tire size is less than recommended, the car will be stiffer, the wheel disc will be more prone to damage, the bearings and suspension assemblies will carry a heavy load.

If you select tires wider from those recommended by the manufacturer, the vehicle's contact with the road will increase, the characteristics will improve during acceleration and braking, the car will better pass through turns at high speeds. There are also disadvantages: the price will increase, the weight will increase, the fuel consumption will increase slightly , the aquaplaning effect will increase (the car enters when driving in puddles or snow porridge).

By and large, the choice of tires depends on the financial status and preferences of the car owner. In general, more powerful and faster cars put tires wider. And for small cars it does not make sense to install wide tires.

Often when buying tires an automobile owner thinks what to buy - tires cheaper or more expensive? At the same time, the tires may not look different. The difference is that expensive tires are made using the latest technologies using modern materials. By purchasing a more expensive model, the buyer pays for:

  • Reducing the weight of the tire (and with it the dynamic characteristics of the car);

  • Reduction of fuel consumption;

  • Increased tire mileage;

  • Improving the controllability of the car, reducing the stopping distance (that is, increasing the safety of the driver and passengers);

  • Noise reduction.

    Depending on the type of pattern, symmetrical, asymmetric and directional tread patterns are distinguished. The latter two are currently used more often, but mostly in expensive cars. Their main advantage over the symmetrical pattern is that they allow you to throw out more snow or water from the contact spot.

    Directional tread pattern. Such tires have excellent characteristics. The only inconvenience is that you can not rearrange the tire from the right side to the left and vice versa. Therefore, it is recommended to carry a spare tire with a symmetrical pattern, because it can be put on any wheel. And if you still want to have a directional "spare", it is better to take the right tire, because according to statistics, the wheels on the right side are more prone to damage. On the right dirtier, more potholes and pits, and any time you leave the roadside you can puncture the tire.

    An asymmetrical tread pattern. These tires show good performance and do not have a problem with the "spare", as when installing it is important to observe only the outer and inner sides of the tire.

    Symmetrical tread pattern. These tires have an advantage in terms of price-quality. And for many it is a decisive factor. After all, not everyone needs supercharacteristics at high speed, many just need high-quality and inexpensive tires.
