Chevrolet Biscayne - the history and characteristics of the most budgetary American sedan

Chevrolet Biscayne - this is a full-size American car, which was produced from 1958 to 1972. It is interesting that this model was one of the most budgetary machines among all manufactured by the concern "Chevrolet".

The beginning of history

In 1958, the American automotive company decided to rename the names of its machines, which at that time existed. And the model, previously known as the 210 index, was called the Chevrolet Biscayne.

A year later, the production of the Delray car was discontinued. And because Biscayne became the cheapest and the least equipped with a car.

It is interesting that this model was produced mainly for taxi companies. But a considerable number of cars were bought by ordinary motorists. Mostly those who appreciated the comfort and space in the cabin, and the luxury of finishing, prestige and dynamics just shut their eyes.

Design and interior

Chevrolet Biscayne was easy to recognize by one small detail, which was a pair of side lights located at the rear. They were not only on those models that were produced in 1959 and 1972. This model had almost no chrome in the finish, and it was produced with small caps. True, certain details and prestigious caps could be bought for a surcharge.

What about the salon? It was finished as simple as possible. Upholstery made a vinyl, on the chairs put on simple covers. The steering wheel was also simple, with the signal button in the middle. There were also rugs, however, made of rubber.

And the equipment was also modest. As the basic equipment the hydraulic amplifier of a wheel and brakes was offered. And on the model with 8-cylinder engines put turbohydrodynamic transmission.

By the way, Chevrolet Biscayne sedan was offered both in two- and four-door performance. Then, in 1962, even a version appeared in the body of the station wagon. He existed for six years.

Specifications

It should be noted that in the first years of production, 6-cylinder engines were very popular. Then, in the 1970s, models with V8-type engines began to be manufactured. But they were all carburetor.

The most powerful version was the 427th V8. Its volume was 7 liters, and power - 425 hp. This motor was installed on a model manufactured from 1967 to 1970. Another was an engine with the same power, but at 6.7 liters.

In general, Chevrolet Biscayne, the price of which was really very modest, was completed with good power units. There were versions for 135, 145, 155, 170, 220, 300, 340, 409 "horses" respectively. By the way, there was a wide choice not only engines, but also a check point. Two variants of "mechanics" (with 3 and 4 gears), and also three- and four-speed "automatic machines" were offered. But each version was rear-wheel drive. In this regard, the choice was not granted.

By the way, about the cost. Sedan with a V8-engine was offered for only $ 2,471.

Other facts

This machine, thanks to its simplicity and reliability, has become popular. Its value attracted all. After all, the prices for more luxurious models, such as "Impala" or Bel Air, were more than three thousand dollars. Not surprisingly, by the end of the 60s this machine had broken all sorts of sales records.

I would like to note a special attention to the model on which the previously mentioned 425-horsepower engine with reinforced suspension and powerful brakes was installed.

In 1960, the concern began to produce a special version designed for taxi drivers. She became known as Fleetmaster. True, this car was even simpler than Biscayne. But he had cigarette lighter for the rear passengers, doors with armrests and sun visors. Everything that was inside was meant for the convenience of customers, not the driver.

Over 14 years of production, it was possible to sell about 76,800 copies with a V8-engine, and approximately 16,700 - with a base, I6.

It is interesting that now this model is very valuable among collectors. And the prices for it are quite large. True, if you exploit it, you must be as accurate as possible. And provide the car with proper care. Any details - be it generators on the Chevrolet Biscayne, or what other parts, it is very difficult to get now. So it's better to do without breakdowns.
