How to choose the wings for a bicycle?

Suitable bicycle wings are not sold with every model of this transport. Therefore, it is often necessary to pay special attention to the choice of this equipment. Thus, the wings can be either removable or permanent. They play the role of shields and are made of plastic or metal. Wings for a bicycle are mounted on the frame or on the fork, located above the wheel. Their main function is to protect them from flying mud and water while the bicycle is moving.

The choice of wings for a bicycle is not an easy task, as the modern range of this equipment is very wide. Different models differ in appearance, dimensions, as well as materials of manufacture and ways of fastening. It is from all these factors that the price depends.

Needless to say, a good bicycle wing is appreciated first of all by how it protects the bicyclist from dirt in front and behind. During active movement on a wet surface without asphalt, splashes from under the front wheel can stain the face and chest, and dampness from the rear wheel flies to the back. Under such driving conditions, the characteristics of the appearance of the products go back to the background. So choosing wings for a bicycle based solely on simplicity of fasteners and attractive design is not entirely correct.

This protective equipment is divided into several main types. Wings for a bicycle are short stationary and quick-detachable, and also stationary long ones. All of them differ from each other in their effectiveness, but the main criterion of choice is the width. In any case, the wing should be wider than the wheel protectors, this will provide good protection from splashes.

As for the separation along the length, stationary short wings are made mainly of plastic and fastened close to the wheel. Among the advantages of such equipment is their ease and simplicity of fastening. But the drawbacks are that the wings, which are two-thirds shorter than the long ones, do not protect the biker's feet from getting dirt.

Quick-setting short wings differ, of course, by fastening method. They are just as light, but they are usually much higher than the tire. Accordingly, this kind of protection from dirt and moisture is even worse, but dust and earth do not accumulate between the tire and the wing.

The third group of protective equipment from mud - long stationary wings. They are made of metal, so they are reliable and durable. This kind of wings is fixed in three places, very close to the wheel, which provides a good level of protection for the cyclist. So, this equipment performs its main function well, but it also adds extra grams to the total weight of the bicycle. In addition, the drawbacks include dirt, which will accumulate between the wheel and the wing. In addition, long bicycle wings are not suitable for extreme driving, because they will prevent the overcoming of steep obstacles. Having familiarized with this information and correctly applying it in practice, it will not be so difficult to choose suitable wings for a bicycle.
