Honda City - history of changes

Honda City is a subcompact sedan that has been produced since 1981. For the thirty years the model has gone through a lot of reworking, concerning both design and characteristics. How exactly was the development of the car? We will now describe all the details of the numerous restylings.

Original Honda City

Initially, the model was submitted as a three-door hatchback. Its distinctive feature was that the rear door opened up. At that time, such a "chip" was present only for several brands of this class. The car body was taller - this was done to maximize the interior space in the car without taking up too much space on the road.

In 1982, the first modification of a turbocharged engine was launched . And a little later the cabriolet came on sale.

City Turbo and City Turbo 2

In 1982, the company Mugen, which at that time was tuning Honda, released its first car - Honda City Turbo. True, it almost completely repeated the already existing model.

In 1983, the top version was presented - the second version of the car. It was equipped with a turbo with an intercooler and an electronic fuel injection system. Engine power is one hundred and ten horsepower, and the weight of the model is only 735 kilograms. Thus, an easy and at the same time powerful car was created, which showed itself equally well both on sports routes and on city roads.

The second generation

In 1986, and then in 1989, Honda City was twice updated. But the second restyling was so little different from the first that it was decided not to separate it into a separate generation, and the modifications themselves were called GA1 and GA2, respectively. It is characteristic that in this series there are completely no models with an open top, i.e. Cabriolets. On foreign markets, this car came out with the name "Honda Logo".

The third generation

In 1996 Honda City again received a number of updates. This time it was intended for export exclusively to the Asian market. And the car became a four-door sedan of the middle class. Its engine was less powerful than in previous versions, but it still had a good power-to-weight ratio: 115 horsepower with a total weight of 985 kilograms.

The fourth generation

In November 2002, the following model restyling appeared. Now Honda had four-wheel drive. And in the car the appearance changed. The new design received headlights (both basic and fog), taillights, a bumper, a radiator grill. In addition, the front part has become longer by 65 millimeters, and the rear bumper - by fifteen. Mirrors began to be equipped with electric drives. The interior of the cabin changed little: only new lighting lamps appeared and a comfortable armrest for the driver.

Fifth generation

Since 2008, the sale was completely new Honda City. Its size did not exceed Jazz or Fit, and the design was completely updated.

Consumption of fuel

After technological innovations introduced by engineers in 2005, the model participated in a competition to save fuel. In one liter it traveled more than twenty-six kilometers. At the same time, according to the rules of the contest, there were four people in the car, a heavy cargo lay in the trunk, and the air conditioner was switched on. The length of the route was six hundred and sixty kilometers, among which there were not only flat sections of the road, but also quite steep mountain rises.

This economy is very impressive, so Honda City is perfect for drivers who appreciate powerful and manoeuvrable cars, while also paying close attention to their financial costs.
