The Institute of Helmholtz is an eye clinic, which in many ways determined the formation and development of Russian ophthalmology. This multidisciplinary research center is the head institution in the system of the Ministry of Health of Russia on the problems of ophthalmology. He coordinates the scientific and research activities of the leading departments of ophthalmology of Russian medical universities.

Specialists

Helmholtz Eye Clinic, whose reviews are only the most positive, has more than six hundred employees. 37 employees of the institution are doctors of medical sciences (17 of them are professors), 88 - candidates of medical sciences. The highest qualification category has 64 specialists, 11 of which are the title of "Honored Doctor". Two employees have the honorary title "Honored Worker of Science".

Organizational structure

Of the 57 departments (clinical, scientific, auxiliary) is the Research Institute of the GB. Helmholtz. The eye clinic includes an emergency and emergency department where patients are treated 24 hours a day. Every year thousands of people help in the department. There is also a children's and adult clinic (an annual visit - about 200 thousand people). There are 6 inpatient departments with 300 beds, where up to 9,000 patients receive treatment per year. All people are provided with high-tech medical care - only the latest technologies, medicines, implants are used in the institution.

In addition, the hospital includes the Center for Catastrophe Medicine "Protection", acting on the basis of the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive Surgery, Traumatology and Eye Prosthesis, where people who have been injured in car accidents, terrorist acts, and natural disasters are assisted. The great importance of pediatric ophthalmology is given by the Helmholtz Institute. The eye clinic (children's department) develops surgical techniques and conducts diagnostic studies, many of which are of considerable scientific and practical value and are truly unique.

Establishing an institution

At the heart of the institute was a noble idea to open an eye clinic for the poor in Moscow. The initiative belonged to the doctor KL. Adelheim. The construction of the hospital was led by the well-known charity of Varvara Alekseeva. On November 17, 1990, the institution was opened. At first it was named after AA and VA Alekseev. It was the first clinic in the capital, providing free assistance and giving out medicine to all those in need. Initially, only three buildings functioned: the main building (now this is the 1st building), a dwelling house for employees and a building of outbuildings.

The hospital, originally opened for 50 beds, in 1903 had already 72 beds, and outpatient reception increased from 100 to 150-200 people per day. Even then, the children's department operated in the clinic, which had no analogues in any institution not only in Russia, but also in Western Europe. The staff was also very limited: the head physician (also the director), four ophthalmologists, a pharmacist, 28 support workers. Total - 34 people. But despite such a small number of members, during 1900-1903. In the clinic, more than 2,000 inpatient and 3,000 outpatient surgeries were performed, about 150,000 outpatient visits were registered, 2,500 people were cured in a hospital.

Development of the hospital

It was here that his outstanding physician activity began with the outstanding ophthalmologist M.I. Averbakh. From 1903 until his death (1944), he was the permanent director and chief physician of the institution. Now on the territory of the institute for the perpetuation of the memory of it is a monument-bust.

During the First World War, without reducing the amount of assistance to citizens, the hospital also helped the wounded. Even in post-revolutionary, full of hardships and devastation, the institution was fully provided with heating, lighting, medicines, and nutrition. The territory gradually expanded, by 1925 the number of beds had increased to 150. The clinic has become, among other things, a base for study: from 1910 to 1919 two thousand students were trained here. To improve their knowledge in the field of ophthalmology, oculist doctors from all the cities of the country came here. Scientific activities were conducted, conferences were held twice a month.

In 1936, the institution was renamed the Central Research Institute of Ophthalmology, and in 1948 - in the Moscow Research Institute of the GB. Helmholtz. The eye clinic has received the status of the head state ophthalmologic scientific and practical center. All the following time, the Institute actively developed. In different years, the institution was headed by many famous doctors: from 1903 to 1944. - Averbakh, from 1944 to 1953 - Kolen, from 1954 to 1965 - Roslavtsev, from 1966 to 1986 years. - Trutnev, from 1986 to 1989 years. - Egorova, from 1989 to 2004 - Yuzhakov. Since 2004 until now, the hospital is headed by Professor Neroev.

Activities of the Institute in our days

Currently, the Helmholtz Eye Clinic in Moscow carries out a multidisciplinary activity. The following departments function:

  • Plastic, reconstructive surgery, traumatology and eye prosthetics;
  • Pathology of the optic nerve and retina;
  • Pathology of ophthalmoergonomics, binocular vision and refraction;
  • Glaucoma;
  • Pathology of the eyes in children;
  • Ophthalmoniccology and radiology;
  • Allergic and infectious diseases of the eyes;
  • Contact vision correction;
  • Physical methods of treatment and homeopathy;
  • Reflexology;
  • Radiation therapy and X-ray diagnostics;
  • Virology and immunology;

  • Pathophysiology and biochemistry.

Priority areas

The hospital pays special attention to diseases that are now of the greatest social importance. From this point of view, a truly unique institution - the Helmholtz Research Institute. The eye clinic solves the priority problems of ophthalmology, which helps prevent vision and blindness. Such problems include glaucoma, damage to the eyes, nearsightedness, oncological pathologies of the eyes in adults and children, congenital diseases of the organs of vision, pathology of the optic nerve and retina, allergic and infectious diseases of the eyes.

Long-term scientific research has allowed to develop new methods of diagnostics and technology of prevention and treatment of the listed pathologies. Their introduction into broad practice made it possible to significantly improve the quality of ophthalmic care for people and raise its level.

Institute development

In 1976, the Moscow Eye Clinic Helmholtz was the first in Russia to create a department of radiology and ophthalmo-oncology to carry out practical and scientific activities to improve the treatment system in children and adults of eye tumors, its orbit and adnexa. The institution uses informative modern methods of high-tech treatment of benign and malignant neoplasms, develop options for the prevention of oncological diseases of the organs of vision.

The Helmholtz Eye Clinic also substantiated the three-factor theory of the origin of myopia, which resulted in the identification of new ways of its treatment and pathogenetic prophylaxis, a system for the treatment of amblyopia and strabismus, which includes diploptic, orthotics, pleoptics.

In the hospital, medical and surgical treatment of damage to the visual organs and their severe outcomes is carried out, including reconstructive operations, removal of magnetically and magnetically foreign bodies using specially designed tools and magnets. With different ophthalmopathology, lasers are used.

The latest techniques

Ophthalmoplastic surgery with the use of carbon analogs that do not have analogues in the world, operations with the use of ultrasound, contact correction of eyesight with the use of soft cosmetic and therapeutic lenses, pathogenetic treatment of hereditary retinal abiotrophy - the Helmholtz Research Institute is doing all this.

The Eye Clinic has been carrying out organizational and methodological work on glaucoma for many years: it tests different methods of detecting the disease at an early stage, and develops the newest methods of medical and surgical treatment. Specialists of the Institute are struggling with chlamydial eye infection, which is currently a serious medical and social problem not only in our country, but also in a number of states in America and Europe.

In the hospital, with the help of the newest methods, diagnostics and treatment of disabling pathologies in the eyes are performed in children: congenital glaucoma and cataract, enterovirus and perinatal uveitis, optic nerve and retinal diseases, retinopathy of prematurity. Based on the genogeography of various hereditary eye diseases in children, the features of the spread of 34-nosological forms were revealed, which became the basis for creating medical-genetic interregional registers.

Head of the Department of Eye Pathology in Children is the chief pediatric ophthalmologist of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. Katargin. It is a unique specialized ophthalmic and pediatric department, where children are provided with diagnostic and diagnostic assistance, and conduct research on a wide range of acquired and congenital diseases. Helmholtz Children's Eye Clinic is engaged in the solution of the current problems of ophthalmology, on which the prevention of blindness and blindness in children depends. Here we study the etiology, the pathogenesis of severe eye pathologies and develop methods for their treatment. These diseases include, in addition to the above, clouding the cornea, eye anomalies, secondary glaucoma.

Equipment

The department has computer complexes for psychophysical and electrophysiological development, spectral coherent optical tomography, ultrasonic devices for biomicroscopy and eye scanning, dopplerography, fluorescent angiography with the possibility of obtaining multimodal images of eye structures, computer perimetry. All children (without age restrictions) are given an ophthalmological complex examination, which makes it possible to establish the prevalence of the pathological process and pathogenetic factors with high accuracy. The operating unit is equipped with the latest equipment and modern microscopes, which make it possible to produce any kinds of microsurgical high-tech operations.
