Flag of Mauritania: type, meaning, history

The national flag of Mauritania is made in the form of a traditional rectangle. Its length refers to the width in the classical proportion of three to two. The main part of the panel is dark green, only in the center is used gold. He depicted a crescent moon, whose horns are directed upwards and around the five-pointed star. The coat of arms also has a similar appearance. Like the flag of Mauritania, it is made in green and has the shape of a circle. The border is white, the text is in Arabic and French. The name of the country is written there. On the green field, as well as on the standard, the golden crescent and five-pointed star are placed. On their background, a white date palm is depicted. Its fruits are the basis for the economy of this African state.

Like any other, the flag of Mauritania has a specific meaning, explaining the meaning of each detail. For example, a rich green color is a sign of state religion, which is practiced by almost all residents of the country. This shade is traditionally associated with Islam, so it can often be found on the flags of the region. The crescent and the star are also associated with this religion. The golden color, which they depict, is intended to symbolize the sands of the Sahara desert. This flag of Mauritania indicates the geographical position of the state - it is in the north of the African continent.

History of appearance

For the first time variants of a cloth began to appear in 1958. Then the country gained an autonomous status. Before Mauritania belonged to the French. The next year, a referendum on independence was held and the current flag was approved, and already in 1960 the state became completely sovereign. Since then, the cloth is always used on all solemn occasions, raising it as a symbol of freedom. However, the situation in the country remains disappointing. Despite total independence from France, many residents still do not have any civil liberties. Mauritania is the only state in the world where slavery is still officially approved. A fifth of the country's inhabitants belong to the ruling Berber class.
