Diaphragmatic hernia of the stomach - not a reason for much anxiety, but a call to action

The hernia that appeared on the esophageal aperture of the diaphragm, which looks like a strongly protruding wall, is commonly called a hernia of the stomach. The diaphragm is a thin muscular plate that is located between the abdominal cavity and the thoracic cavity, it divides the cavity data and isolates the organs (lungs, aorta and heart) from the gastrointestinal tract and other abdominal organs. It has only one relatively large opening through which the esophagus passes.

If the diet and rest periods are not respected, heavy physical exertion causes a stomach hernia disease, which in itself can not be cause for great anxiety. Very often, the presence of this disease does not require emergency treatment.

In world medical practice, there is an agreement that was reached with the participation of major specialists in the field of gastroenterology, who have extensive experience in the treatment of hernias that have arisen in the esophageal area of the diaphragm. This agreement establishes the following rules:

  • Surgery for the disease of a hernia of the stomach, treatment of the consequences, are made only if the hernia occupies more than the third part of the esophagus;
  • It is necessary to operate a hernia with complications, with an ulcer of the esophagus, and associated with bleeding;
  • All other hernias are not operated, according to statistics it is more than 90% of all diseases;
  • The operation does not eliminate the causes that contribute to the formation of a hernia, in all cases.

Causes of hernia formation

The main reasons for the formation of the disease of a hernia of the stomach is considered to be a violation of the rules and norms for food intake, smoking and abuse of strong alcoholic beverages. In the event that a patient is diagnosed with a medical condition, indicating a hernia in the esophagus of the diaphragm, he must organize his life differently. It is necessary not only to undergo a course of conservative treatment, which includes procedures aimed at eliminating the reasons for throwing the contents of the stomach into the esophagus, as well as eliminating the consequences of such casting. The patient must abandon the habits that caused the disease.

Symptoms of the diaphragmatic hernia

With such a disease as a hernia of the stomach, the symptoms manifest themselves in the form of pain. Most often this is observed immediately after an unbearable meal, with disproportionate physical exertion and lifting of heavy cargo. Tinea pain can occur with coughing and with flatulence, such a symptom is sometimes mistaken for the initial stage of pancreatitis. The pain may disappear or decrease after inhalation, vomiting, belching, changes in body position and reception of alkaline solutions.

With the diagnosis of a hernia of the stomach, usually the pains are mild, dull, occasionally very strong and intensified when the body tilts forward, especially if inflammation and erosion are present.

Inflammatory process and erosion on the tissues of the diaphragm are an occasion for urgent surgical treatment of the disease of a hernia of the stomach, and no other methods of healing without the use of surgical intervention are known by medical practice. Every patient should remember that the process of transferring the operation "for later" in some cases can be extremely dangerous.

The first symptoms of hernia formation are not a cause for great anxiety, but serve as a call to action. It is necessary to control the diet and volume of nutrition, reduce physical activity, do not consume alcohol. It is necessary to apply to a medical institution where specialists will diagnose and determine the degree of hernia formation, on the basis of which methods of further treatment will be indicated. Only an experienced gastroenterologist can decide on the timing and type of surgery required.
