If the xiphoid hurts

The xiphoid process is that part of the sternum, which is the shortest. And its form is individual for each person. Often people are interested in what diseases are associated with unpleasant sensations in this part of the body.

When the xiphoid process hurts, you can talk about the presence of pathologies in the organs located near it, including the heart, gall bladder and stomach. And if the painful sensations behind the appendix increase after each meal, with sudden movements and even a little physical exertion, then it is worthwhile to conduct an examination of the heart muscle.

Discomfort sensations in the area where the xiphoid process is located may be associated with the sliding rib cartilage syndrome. Its origin is associated with the receipt of any injuries. As a consequence, the patient experiences stupid pain in the sternum with any movement or muscle tension, it becomes aggravated by coughing or sneezing. Excessive mobility of the cartilage can lead to damage to the cellulose, and inflammation of the xiphoid process is formed. When seeking help from a specialist, angina or pneumothorax may be the primary diagnosis, as their clinical pictures are very similar.

Another disease with which the xiphoid process is associated is the syndrome of intercostal neuropathy. Its occurrence can be due to herniated intervertebral discs, overgrowth of bone tissue in the joint region, which leads to compression of the pectorals. In this case, the patient experiences acute shingling pain, which, with a sharp movement or uncomfortable posture, only aggravates. And physical activity, coughing and sneezing keep an uncomfortable sensation for quite a long time.

Myelopathy or, as this disease is also called, myelo-ischemia arises from a violation of the functions of the sternal arteries. This disease belongs to the category rarely seen. It can provoke the presence of thrombi in the arteries, especially if this source is supplemented with kyphoscoliosis, as it provokes tension and squeezing of blood vessels. In rare cases, it appears as a complication after an unsuccessful puncture of the spinal cord. Other symptoms can be associated with a decrease in sensitivity and partial impairment of motor function.

To the next disease affecting the functioning of such a part of the body, as the xiphoid process, is caudopathy. Occurs when a tumor or intervertebral hernia forms in the area of the dural sac. A dural bag is called a hermetically sealed capsule, which is covered with a hard shell of bone tissue and is designed to protect the spinal cord. Recognizing caudopathy is extremely difficult, as it is often supplemented by myelopathy, which in turn erases the clinical picture.

A variety of the above described disease is sacral caudopathy. This disease is also commonly called the syndrome of the sacral fir tree of Emdin. The development of the syndrome is due to the formation of a tumor of a predominantly benign nature. The patient at the same time feels a decrease or a complete loss of sensitivity, however, the movement can be without restrictions.

Often the pain in the xiphoid process testifies to the presence of serious problems in the work of the gastrointestinal tract. For example, a stomach ulcer during an exacerbation causes regular spasms of the esophagus and stomach. Such a sharp pain can seriously scare a person, and for recovery he is ready to go for any treatment and any diets. The causes of ulcers lie in the state of the human nervous system. If he falls into this or that stressful situation every day, the illness will not keep you waiting. Among the main factors can be attributed to malnutrition, that is, excessive consumption of fatty, salty, too sweet or spicy food, as well as alcoholic beverages.
