Diagnosis of the car engine

Most modern cars have a fairly complex engine, equipped with a large number of electronic components. This creates very serious difficulties in the process of diagnosis and subsequent repair. Today, diagnosing an automobile engine is an extremely complex set of tasks, which usually requires special equipment.

Diagnosis of the car engine begins with a computer check. At this stage, the status of all electronic components of the power unit is checked. In addition, during computer diagnostics, specialists are able to get a list of all the malfunctions stored in the vehicle's on-board computer memory. It should also be noted that when using computer - aided scanners of the latest models, experts have the opportunity to test the car in real time. As the employees of the service centers say, this is of great help in troubleshooting.

After computer diagnostics, a complex of additional works is usually conducted, designed to obtain additional information about the current performance of the power unit. This includes measuring the compression in the cylinders of the power unit, checking the candle group and all operating fluids. Let's consider these works in more detail.

By the amount of compression, you can judge the status of the internal components of the power unit. Compression is measured by means of a special instrument - a compressometer, installed in the channels of the candles after their dismantling. For greater accuracy of the results obtained, this work is recommended to be carried out only after the engine has fully cooled down.

According to the state of the candle group, it can be concluded that the piston rings of the power unit are operable. In addition, inspection of the candles allows you to determine the current oil consumption and the state of the injection system. The candle, extracted from a fully serviceable engine, must be a light gray color, with a uniform carbon deposit throughout the circumference. If there are remains of burned oil on the candles, it can be said that there is oil consumption on the diagnosed engine. Uneven carbon deposits of different colors will tell you about the bad atomization of the fuel injectors, and the black color of the spark plugs usually indicates that there is no compression in the cylinders of the car or too much fuel is being supplied there.

During the inspection of the operating fluids, the oil in the crankcase of the motor is inspected and the condition of the coolant is checked. If there is rust in it, you can safely say that the engine has recently overheated. In turn, checking the oil in the crankcase of the power unit allows you to draw additional conclusions about the current operability of the internal units of the power unit.

Particular attention in the process of diagnosing an automobile engine is usually given to the color of its exhaust gases. Being guided only by them, an experienced master can easily identify a system or a car assembly in which there is a malfunction. Exhaust gases with a hint of white color can be noticed in those cases when a coolant enters the cylinders of the engine. When there are black shades in the exhaust gases, it can be said that there are serious deviations in the fuel system of the engine. Finally, the blue smoke from the exhaust pipe usually appears in cases where the motor consumes an increased amount of oil.

In addition, during the diagnosis should pay attention to the uniformity of the exhaust gases. With the correct operation of all the cylinders of the power unit, the exhaust gases exit the pipe of the muffler smoothly, without creating clogs or interruptions. If there are malfunctions in one or several cylinders, then when you are near the car silencer, you will feel characteristic claps.
