Exhaust pipe: varieties, destination, malfunctions

Any car is equipped with both an intake and exhaust system. Many people may find that the exhaust pipe is just a continuation of the exhaust manifold, which is used exclusively for the exhaust of exhaust gases without any outside benefit to the engine. To some extent this statement is true, but its uselessness can be argued. First of all, it is necessary to say that the exhaust systems are rather complicated and are the result of long calculations, which include such quantities as diameter, shape, length, and also the volume of the resonator and silencer.

Exhaust pipes can be made of various materials: heat-resistant, lightweight, stainless, chrome plated and so on. It all depends on what temperature ranges they will work on, how much they will be visible from the outside. Weight is also important, since the replacement of the exhaust system is often done to facilitate the car to make it more dynamic.

Now about the diameter. The exhaust pipe of increased diameter has increased throughput, hence, engine ventilation is improved. In addition, the pressure in the system is significantly reduced, and hence the noise of the gases at the output decreases. Naturally, every car owner will not be against improving this figure of his car.

Exhaust pipes are often made of stainless steel. The fact is that they have an elevated melting point, and also have a low weight and ideal anticorrosive properties. Plus, stainless steel is easier to process, as it is softer than other types of metal.

If the engine has a large volume, then the exhaust pipe can be divided into two streams. There are cases when the intake pipe from the unit itself leaves alone, but the muffler has the width of the entire car, so two nozzles come out of it.

More often it is possible to meet an exhaust system in which for each 3 or 4 cylinders the exhaust collector is attached, that is the exhaust pipe is simply duplicated. This design is widely used in V-engines, since branching is not difficult, and their volume, as a rule, is equal to three liters and more. In low-volume engines such a system is not used, since it only increases the cost of a car without visible improvements, such refinement becomes solely the owner's initiative.

A fairly common problem with the exhaust system is its deformation. Naturally, in our country this situation is not uncommon, as the quality of our roads is known to everyone. Car owners in such situations ask the question: "Is not it harmful for the engine?". Yes, it is not critical. This means that the operation of the car can continue in the same mode as it was carried out, but the damaged part of the system is replaced at the first opportunity. To do this, all systems are collapsible, so that you can conduct this procedure easier and without replacing the entire site.

Many car owners believe that the exhaust system does not require any maintenance. In part this is true, but there are some nuances. First of all, you need to monitor its external state, so that the above situation does not arise. Also, when driving, always remember that the exhaust pipe is the lowest point of the car. In the case of burnout or other damage to the pipe with a replacement, do not pull, because the level of external noise rises sharply, and the ride becomes uncomfortable.
