How to adjust the speed on the bike? How to adjust the speed on the bike?

In spite of the fact that the speed switch has a primitive mechanical design, its adjustment may prove to be rather difficult for cyclists. On how to adjust the speed on the bike and learn how to use the switch correctly, read this article.

Let's define with terminology

Before talking about such a thing as adjusting the speed of a bicycle, you need to understand the basic definitions, so that even a novice cyclist would understand what is at stake.

The speed switch is sometimes called a changeover. It is an indispensable component of any modern high-speed bicycle. It looks like a rectangular mechanism with a spring on which a frame (or foot) is attached. Speaking of the speed selector, it is impossible to ignore the mantle - a device that is designed to control the override by adjusting the cable tension. Usually this important detail is attached directly to the handlebar. But there are bike models, where the crochet is on the lower pipe of the front triangle of the frame.

Every experienced cyclist knows what a cock, cassette and high-speed bike system are. For the rest, we give definitions of these terms:

- A rooster is often an aluminum piece, the main purpose of which is to keep the rear speed switch and the frame intact. It is fixed straight to the frame, and already on it the transfer is fixed.

- Cassette - sprockets / gears of different diameters, which are the rear assembly of the bicycle transmission. The cassette is mounted on the rear spool drum.

- System - front transmission assembly. Unlike the cassette, the stars of the system are fixed with hollow bolts on the connecting rods. At once we will notice that it is a question of modern qualitative models. On cheap bicycles the system can not be dismantled, and all the asterisks are fastened together by rivets.

How to adjust the speed on the bike without fixing screws? Two notorious switches marked H and L are directly on the changeover. First - Hight - this is a limiting screw for adjusting large gears (or small sprockets or gears). L (Low) adjusts small transmissions. On different models their location can vary.

Possible causes of fuzzy / incorrect switching of speeds

Before you talk about how to adjust the speed on the bike, let's talk about the possible causes of such defects:

Deformation of the switch or cock;

- the return spring does not work well;

- cable stretching.

How to fix defects?

Every bike with a speed should have an attentive owner. That is, all the details - the cable, asterisks and switches - must be lubricated with special means - lubricants.

If the cable is stretched, then it can be slightly tightened. In the case when it has already torn, it should immediately be replaced by a new one. Algorithm of actions:

- First you need to untwist the cable fixation screw on the switch;

- further it is necessary to extend or cut off a cable if it strongly ripples;

- then it is necessary to disassemble the manet;

- in a special hole you need to insert a new, heavily lubricated lubricant rope;

- then it must be passed through the shirts, which were previously installed in the grooves;

- At the end, fix the cable on the switch with the appropriate screw.

If the spring does not work well enough, it must be rinsed with water and greased.

Deformation of the cock can be seen not only in special bike workshops. A bent cock is visible if you place the rear derailleur frame diagonally. In case of slight deformation, it can be aligned independently, stretching to a level setting of the hind foot. However, remember that this is only a temporary measure. The deformed part is best replaced with a new one. The same goes for bent overturning.

How to adjust the speed on the bike?

On modern models of data of vehicles have two speed switches - front and rear. Usually the adjustment begins with the last one, but sometimes there are cases when it is necessary to adjust only one changeover.

Adjust the rear derailleur

First of all, you need to put the chain on the smallest cassette star . This can be done with the help of the right arm - this part directly affects the rear derailleur on the bike. To release the cable, you need to unscrew the screw that fixes its position. The screw marked H should be unscrewed with a screwdriver so that the smallest sprocket is in the same plane as the sprocket in the foot. Then the cable must be tightened and fastened with a screw.

After that, you should check the operation of the overflow. If the chain does not switch to large rollers (stars), then the rope must be tightened even more, using the drum already on the mantle or on the overturn. The chain is moved to the largest roller and the screw L regulates the position of the switch. Ideally, the overflow should not be possible to get into the spokes, that is, the foot and the star should be in the same plane.

Adjust the front switch

This algorithm of actions will tell you how to adjust the speed on the bike by setting the front changeover:

- The chain again needs to be rearranged to a smaller star.

- Unscrew the screw, you need to release the fixing.

- Use the screw L to adjust the position of the frame, that is, the chain should be in the middle and do not touch the plates.

- Next, pull the cable and secure the tightening screw.

- Use the rear switch to move the chain in the cassette to the smallest star.

- The front change should move the chain to the middle roller. If the chain, while on the second star, touches the outside of the frame, you should tighten the cable with the drum on the left stick.

- After you need to put the switch in position on the biggest gear. If the chain touches the walls of the frame, then it must be moved so that it is in the center. This can be done with the help of a screw N.

After reading this article, you will definitely know the answer to the question of how to adjust the speed on the bike. The main thing is to follow the above algorithms of actions, and the process of adjusting the speed switch seems to you not so difficult.
