Chekhov "Chamber number 6": the fallacy of the life philosophy of Ragin

The philosophical conflict of the human attitude to life is described in this work. The erroneous views on life and the selfishness of Dr. Ragin play a cruel joke with him. Chekhov "Chamber number 6" will interest the thinking readers who are not afraid to ask themselves questions: "Who am I?", "Why do I live?", "Do I value life?".

Historical facts that accompanied the writing of the work

Story Chekhov "Chamber number 6" was written in 1892 under the reign of Tsar Alexander III. In historical memoirs, it is designated as the time of oppression of the thinking man, the struggle against the democratic intelligentsia. It is these problems that are the subject of this work.

Chekhov "Chamber number 6": the story begins with how the psychiatrist Andrei Efimovich Ragin comes to the provincial hospital in the direction. Here he sees all the horrors of such hospitals: unsanitary conditions, useless conditions for patients, poor treatment.

The doctor's room, where the insane are kept, most horrifies the doctor. This is room number 6. Chekhov shows all the horrors of being sick there. It turns out that everyone in the city is afraid of her and at the same time hates her. It seems to the commoners that such patients need to be exterminated as enemies of society. However, no one treats them, they just live there.

Life philosophy of Ragin

Ragin is horrified by the situation in the hospital and the fact that no one heals the sick. But nevertheless nothing to change the doctor is not going to. Firstly, he has a gentle character, because of which he even can not give an order, but in this case it is necessary to radically change the entire control system. And secondly, the changes do not enter into the life philosophy of the protagonist.

During his time as a doctor Ragin gets acquainted with one of the mentally ill - Ivan Gromov. He is surprised that this man is very intelligent, knows how to reason and express his thoughts, but nobody cures him from the persecution mania. Gromov - the exact opposite of Ragin. While Ivan opposes violence, evil, which detects even in the bud and struggles with it in every way, trying to change the existing world for the better, Ragin believes that the evil is ineradicable, it will multiply, so do not even try to join it in the struggle . It is better to go deeper into yourself, to pretend that it does not concern you, and not to notice the ongoing injustice, as Ragin does in relation to hospital procedures.

Because of frequent conversations with the mad about the doctor, odd rumors began to circulate in the town, and eventually his rival, doctor Hobotov, seeks to remove Andrei Efimovich from the position of doctor. His last money that he spends on traveling, to a little to dispel from thoughts of dismissal. On arrival he lives in debt.

Chekhov "Chamber number 6" ends sadly, but still true. Khobotov places Ragin in room number 6. And only after getting into this hell, realizing how unfairly they acted with him, the former doctor understands the error of his philosophy and starts to fight. Although it is too late: despite attempts to escape, screaming and yelling, the society remains adamant. Andrei Yefimovich is beaten by security guard Nikita, and he dies from an apoplexy. Chamber number 6 is a parody of Russia, which is trying to destroy thinking people, in this case Ivan Gromov.

The collapse of Ragin's philosophy of life becomes the main theme of Chekhov's "Chamber No. 6". The summary outlined above will help the reader prepare for exams and at the same time reflect on the need to be a humanist. In more detail, especially the dialogues of the doctor with the patient Gromov, which carry a profound meaning, the reader can learn by reading the story completely.
