Any art work begins with an image - the author's view of a certain phenomenon, situation, a person through the prism of aesthetic and emotional perception. It creates an arena on which action unfolds, characters collide, confronts the objective with the subjective. And the usual description of the room becomes part of the atmosphere, provides new artistic details.

"A room as a room is a bed, a wardrobe, a table" - even the mean words of the character who speaks about the room can convey his mood. For example, disappointment in what you see or the ability to be content with minimal comforts.

It does not matter whether the author uses the long or short description of the room. It should be appropriate: to develop the plot, to reveal the inner world of the hero, to project the attitude of the author himself to what is happening.

Raskolnikov's tiny room becomes the image of the entire city and the life of a small man who is afraid of hitting his head high and bumping into the ceiling of circumstances. Dostoevsky shows how the oppressive atmosphere of the "box" squeezes the consciousness of the character and makes you look for a way out.

The room description is used to characterize the characters. The cabinet of Bolkonsky, filled with an orderly disorder, shows the life of the master full of meaning and activity, calls respect to the man of mental labor on the part of Tolstoy.

Description of the room with an easy submission of the author becomes the embodiment of time, flashed like a furnace spark in the room of the novel "The White Guard" Bulgakov.
