Buenos Aires - description and attractions

The magnificent Buenos Aires is rightly called "South American Paris". This sophisticated, elegant city is located on the banks of the widest river in the world - the Rio de la Plata.

It is believed that Buenos Aires was founded in 1580, but at the beginning of the XIX century a powerful earthquake practically erased it from the face of the earth. The city was rebuilt a little away from the site of the tragedy, and in 1880, thanks to a powerful economic upturn in the wake of the "beef boom," it officially became the capital of Argentina. Currently, more than 40% of the total population of the country lives here.

The name "Buenos Aires" is translated as "fair wind". A good wish really brings luck to all the guests of this amazing place.

Attractions of Buenos Aires

The symbol of the city is the Obelisk located on the Plaza de la Republika. A huge monument 67 meters high was erected in honor of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Buenos Aires. The founded idea, which was embodied in his creation by the architect Alberto Prebisch, is the unbending spirit of the Argentines, who lived at that troubled time. The construction of the Obelisk took place in record time - in just four weeks.

The monument stands on the widest street in the world with ten lanes for traffic. It is called 9th Avenue.

Not far from the Obelisk another attraction is located - the house-museum of the famous science fiction writer Jorge Luis Borges. There are exhibitions, international competitions and auctions devoted to all types of contemporary art.

Buenos Aires is famous for its huge historical center, which includes several areas of the city.

The Recoleta district is the embodiment of the French style of architecture. Here you can visit the best restaurants, shops and museums around the Catholic Cathedral of Iglesia del Pilar. In the heart of the residential area is the famous cemetery of Recoleta, founded in the early 18th century. Now this place is famous for a huge number of sculptures under the open sky and the grave of the legendary Evita Perron.

On Alvear avenue there are antique shops and expensive boutiques, and on Arrovo Avenue there is an art museum, an ice palace and many art galleries.

A small area of San Telmo is a true journey back to the past through narrow stone streets with small houses and old shops. Here are the Plaza Dorrego and the huge antiques market, the Plaza de Mayo, with which the construction of the city began, the Town Hall Cabilde - the oldest building of Buenos Aires, Cassa Rosada - the presidential palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral, in which the ashes of the national hero of Argentina - José de San Martín, Congress with a monumental fountain in the square, many old churches - San Ignacio, El Pilar, the Basilica of Santo Domingo. The legendary theater Colon is also in the historical San Telmo.

La Boca is another picturesque area of the city that stretches along the river. Here you can see street tango dancers and even take some dance lessons from them, sit in elegant cafes and mingle with a festive smiling crowd. Football fans will certainly be interested in the Boca Juniors stadium , where the legendary Diego Maradona played, and the museum of the history of the team.

The most modern area of Buenos Aires is called Puerto Madero. In fact, this is an old port, which was completely restored. Now here are the most fashionable restaurants and nightclubs of the city, and the historicity of the place was preserved only by the ancient facades of red brick buildings and several ships of the Argentine Armada.

Buenos Aires - reviews

The city of contrasts is just about the capital of Argentina. Elegant French architecture, luxurious old buildings are combined with funny colorful houses, entirely built of slate and pieces of metal. Buenos Aires is a beautiful graffiti, wide avenues, rosewood trees and, of course, tango.
