And what is the difference between ice and ice? Ice and ice: differences, features and methods of struggle

Winter manifestations of the nature of citizens today are affected insofar as they prevent them from getting to work or home. Proceeding from this, many are confused in purely meteorological terms. It is unlikely that any of the inhabitants of megacities will be able to answer the question about what distinguishes ice from icy conditions. Meanwhile, understanding the difference in these terms will help people after listening to (or reading) the weather forecast, better prepare for what awaits them in the winter on the street.

Distinctive features of ice

To begin with, meteorologists associate it with atmospheric precipitation, such as rain, hail and snow. Although, of course, it is in the final version that ice from the sky does not "arrive". It is an unpleasant accompaniment of other types of precipitation: fog, drizzle or rain - when the temperature outside the window is zero or slightly lower (to minus three). However, stereotypes work: most people, in response to a question about how the glaze differs from icy conditions, say that the ice is on the ground, and fall from it, and the icy conditions are everything else. Which is fundamentally wrong. First of all, ice is accompanied by icing of branches of bushes and trees, wires and protruding parts of buildings. But most importantly - it lasts only when there are precipitations that cause it (fog, for example), and the ice crust formed by ice is very thin. Although, if the weather is suitable for a long time, intentionality can be significant; Then the power transmission lines break and the antennas, branches and trees break down.

Positive sides of ice

Of course, this natural phenomenon is accompanied by unpleasant consequences for people and their property (communications, green spaces, etc.). But there is also a pleasant sign of the difference in the ice from the icy conditions. As already mentioned, it lasts as long as the precipitation falls. If they quickly ended - the ice builds up and the thin layer of formed ice melts quickly. Another advantage of ice is that it is extremely rare in pure form. Nevertheless, many conditions must coincide: winter and not snow, but rain or fog, temperature - at least three degrees below zero. So the meeting with the consequences of this particular manifestation of the element happens infrequently.

Ice - what is it?

Since people are more interested in the condition of sidewalks and highways, they pay little attention to objects raised above the ground. Unless for icicles watch vigilantly: their falling can seriously do much harm to health, and even to interrupt a life. In principle, both phenomena manifest themselves almost identically. The main thing is how ice differs from ice - the latter increases the ice crust on compacted snow more often after a rain or a thaw, when the cold snaps. Most of the water in this process accumulates on the ground, so that the antennas, branches, etc. are less burdened with weight. So you can point out the weighty difference between ice from the ice, which is important for the townspeople: in the second case, plantations and communications that move along the ground and less suffer more.

Insidiousness of the icy surface

If the first mentioned phenomenon of nature has some advantages, the ice cover is a complete flaw. Worst of all, for its onset, precipitation is not necessary. Any city by itself evaporates water. Moreover, pipe breakthroughs are not uncommon for our locality. This is where you begin to realize how important the reasons for the formation of ice and ice - the difference is simply amazing. The first phenomenon, however that may be, needs precipitation. A glaze of ice immediately take advantage of the opportunity, and because just close to the heat hatch nearby, an unplanned rink appears nearby.

Moreover, the layer formed by glaze is kept extremely long - it does not depend on rainfall. The most common option - the ice is covered with fallen snow. In second place - another thaw (or spring). And in case of accidental warming, one can only hope that the crust will have time to melt until the next cold snap.

How to deal with this

Since both the icy surface and ice cover are approximately the same, the methods of combating them are also not very different from each other, and are mainly associated with the overcoming of the slipperiness of passers-by and the road surfaces of the city. The main methods remain sand, gravel, small construction debris, granite from granite and salt. It can not be said that these are very effective methods. First of all, salt corrodes the material from which the shoes are made. The rubber robots and boots last the longest, but you can not go through them in the cold for a long time. Other materials often can not stand a month. The sand is not very good either: it often drowns in the resultant mop when thawing, and does little to resist the slip.

Modern reagents are used in some (especially large) cities, but their effectiveness and safety are still in question.

And the struggle against the intentionality of aboveground ice formations is still limited to the fact that icicles with mixed success are knocked down by tired wipers. Yet people are accustomed to look more under their feet than to something that hangs from above.

Unusual American methods

And ice and ice in recent years really worried the Americans. And the lack of proven methods of combating them has greatly developed imagination and ingenuity among the inhabitants of the distant continent. So, in Wisconsin the routes are poured with cheese brine - waste from cheese production. The smell is delicious, but obtrusive, and haunts the traveler at a distance of many kilometers. But the wheels do not slip, and the fragrance becomes secondary.

Pennsylvania and New York, too, "salt" the road, but add the juice of beet juice (they produce sugar). And the smell of cheese is missing, and the shoes are much less spoiled.

Ice or ice - not so important, the main thing - do not fall, and that the car does not bring!
